Okay, fast forward a bit to my friends mothers time.  He's just remembered that his mother Elizabeth Murphy (the daughter of Joseph Murphy and Elizabeth Ann Spencer) married a John Murphy who was a baker in Maesteg, her sister Eileen married john murphys brother.
This was probably in the late 30's or the early 1940's.  Both sisters left the murphy boys and remarried. Eileen remarried a man with the surname Crocker/croker.  Both sisters came to australia.

Hi Jaju, just thought about the John who died in WW1 - possible his army record is on A******y? Not sure if it was just those who survived had their records published, but that could give you a connection and further details.

Witnesses - Cookesley is a name that married into my family (but she was from London). There were definitely a few Cookesley's living in the Maesteg area at the time, but I forget where I saw the names now  :-[ This was 1890, so I have had a look at the 1881 census, and there may be a match or two for your witness:

RG11 5327 / 40  Page   9 - William Cooksly - age 18. Living in Alma Road (which is Maesteg, not Cwmdu, but that's how the reg district has it)

Using only the free 1911 census - there is a Joseph Murphy aged 26 living in Bridgend.  Freebmd shows this as the registration district for the 1909 marriage so seems a good bet

Using the instructions below - wife seems to be Bessie aged 21 - Bessie was a common corruption of Elizabeth.  There is also a 19yr old Michael Murphy - may be Joseph's brother

Have you checked that entry?

Have you also checked the 1901 census as I found an entry in Glamorgan for a Joseph Murphy b 1883 - boarder and in the same household there is a 50yr old John Murphy.  Both were born County Clare Ireland

Cracked it.

There was a Sophia born to a Walter Murphy and Mary in Chepstow (one of 8 of their children)

I knew Sophia was 1 of 8 but not who they were.

And Walter Murphy married Mary Ledgingham 2 years before the birth of their first child in chepstow.

Good enough for me (especially after 50 years searching).

I'm celebrating!!!! ;D ;D ;D
