Can't find marriage
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 19:00 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have been trying to find a marriage for my great grandparents, John Henry Ince born about 1834/36 to Ellen/Eleanor Watson born about 1838, he was born Bethnal Green and she in Hoxton, Shoreditch, I have their death certificates, baptism for 4 of their children and the birth certificate of their 1st child John Henry Ince, born 1862 , at Rose Street, Shoreditch. Have tried all the usual places but have failed to find this marriage, either they didn't get married or somehow it has been missed when being transcribed. Can anybody help. Thanks

Hi,

I've found a marriage for Eleanor Watson in Shoreditch, Apr-Jun 1859, 1c 470 - there are 2 possible grooms, neither of them John Ince.  There are 2 marriages for John Ince, in 1857 and 1858, but neither of them are to Eleanor Watson.

It might be worth buying the certificate for Eleanor's marriage, in case there was a mistake with the groom. (I looked at the John Ince ones in the register, so know that there wasn't a mistake with those, but couldn't find the EW marriage in the register, only in the index).

The full GRO index for the June qtr of 1859 shows no entry for a John Ince with the same registration number as that for Eleanor

Hi everyone
Thanks for looking for me, I did find that William Doouss, then tried Ellen/Eleanor with that last name, but still no marriage, couldn't find a death for a William Doouss, or in the census. Ellen is definatly with John on the 1861 census etc., on one of the census they are down as Mee instead of Ince, I have looked at every combination I could think of. I am wondering if Ellen parents died when she was young and maybe she could have been adopted and Watson was her new family name. Pulling my hair out. :(

But then you will still expect she would marry using in the name Watson, if that is what she used.

Where did you get her maiden name from?

sorry - made a mess of that - my reply wasnt supposed to be in the quote box!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I found her maiden name on her children baptism and I have 2 birth certificates for her 2 of her children, it shows Ellen Ince formerly Watson. What also puzzled our family was that we have found only the last four children baptized at St Philip Bethnal Green and Bethnal Green Holy Trinity on the same day ( I presume these church have merged together) they were a lot older, two of the baptism say Ellen Watson and two say Eleanor Watson, same address for them all.

There wasn't necessarily a marriage, or it may have taken place many years later (maybe around the time of the batch lot of baptisms?) It is also unusual to record the maiden name on CoE christening records.

Looking at freebmd, I'm wondering if their first child might have been the Eleanor Ince b. and d. 1859 Shoreditch.

 - this mentions that the location of Holy Trinity (formed out of parts of Saint Philip as well as St. Leonard Shoreditch) was in a particularly poor area.

St. James the Great in Bethnal Green was somewhat famous for waiving the marriage fees and trying to encourage marriage by giving newly-wed couples a loaf of bread!
