Oh Heavens - apparently I'm a bit dense tonight. It occurs to me that I can't find any coverage in archived news as these sailings were likely kept on the QT.

Thanks again for all those who contributed to this exploration.

Hello,
My PhD research traces all the British children who went to Canada as evacuees in the Second World War. I have created an evacuee database  (including over 3000 children). Who was your relative?  If she (I think I read female) came with CORB then I will have some pertinent information.
I hope to hear from you.

Welcome to RootsChat chalstead

It's fabulous to hear from you. :)

As the CORB evacuee is still living, I can't post her name here. Please post 2x more messages (even just say hi in 2 separate posts on this thread). Once you've done that, I will be able to send you a private message.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello

My Father was registered to take the trip to Canada on the  SS City of Benares, sailing from Glasgow to Canada on Friday, 13th Sept, 1940. The ship was torpedoed and  sunk on September 17th 1940, 83 children drowned.
Fortunately, my Dad became seriously ill with diptheria and could not travel.
The diptheria saved his life, as he recovered and lived to nearly 93yo!

**Note - interesting departure date, Friday the 13th !!!

Good morning CuriousCate.

Thanks for sharing your father's story. He was fortunate to have both recovered from diphtheria, missed the boat, survive the war years and live such a long life.

Perhaps Friday the 13 was a lucky day for him.  ;)
