County Main

I have found an entry in a record for a place of Birth listed as County Main, Ireland.

Can anyone help identify where this relates to today?

I do not have copies if the information at present they are with my nephew.  The person was Owen or Eugene Shevelan (or variants)

I believe it was either the 1871 Census for Blackhill near Consett or a transcript of the church records at Blackhill St Mary's made by the PP, from the original records which I was not allowed to see.

My Notes:
This gentleman may have/seems to have changed his first name to Owen from Eugene or it could have been an error in the church records
He was confirmed at St Mary's Blackhill Consett on 18th Feb 1883 as Eugene and
took Patrick as his confirmation name.
His daughter Clara's record also shows the name Eugene and the Mothers as Anna
(Nee MacDonald)
Surname variation Shevlan on Marriage record at St Mary's Blackhill but Shevelin on Confirmation record.
Shown as Owen Shovlin in 1871 Census.

Other than King's/Offaly and Queen's/Laois the county names have not changed since the 1800s, so it must be a mishearing, mistranscription or similar...

If you locate the source it might be worth posting the details in case someone can decipher it.

p.s I think I mentioned on another post that Euginius is Latin for Owen - so possibly not really a name change. RC records were often written up in Latin.

this isn't a scientifically researched remark, but Owen/Eugene/Eugenius seems to be more common in northern parts of the country.

My only Owens come from (i)Sligo/Roscommon (ii) Wexford but with Donegal surname.

So Monaghan sound quite a good starting place to me.

Yes I suppose Mon could have beed transcribed by the priest as Main.  I have not seen the original records.

I calculate that if he is that Owen it would mean he was confirmed at 18.  It is possible but I consider it would normally be confirmation by 11.
