Tunnicliffe/Gotheridge

Help to find marriage required.
Arthur Tunnicliffe & Elizabeth Gotheridge had at least 8 children. All registered in Derby.   Arthur was born 1874, Elizabeth Abt 1877.
'May Tunnicliffe' seems to be the eldest Baptised 21-Jul-1895 Trusley, Derbyshire. The birth certs I have details off show mother as Elizabeth Tunnicliffe formerly Gotheridge.  However checking all the usual suspects I can not find a marriage which I suspect to be around 1892-1895. Can anyone help me solve this mystery? Of course they may have not been married. But I can't find any reason why they might not be either.
Many thanks - First posting

Hello BigTB

It would seem that Elizabeth & Arthur weren't married. I've checked the marriages from 1890 to 1905 and nothing comes up.
It's quite possible that Elizabeth was from a broken home as in 1881 she's living with her grandparents and in 1891 she's moved to Derby and is a servant.
Have you got the census returns for this family, if not, let me know.

I agree that it appears they did not Marry.

1901 Census they have Ernest A age 4 and George age 2 with them.
It is interesting as all the Childrens Christenings are on Familysearch.Org.
But where is May in 1901 (christened 21 July 1895) ?

Trish :)

There are quite a lot of Gotheridges in Church Broughton and at least 2 Elizabeths, so the one I mentioned previously might be the wrong one.
There's a May Tunnicliff staying at Brailsford in 1901 with grandparents John & Elizabeth Tunnicliff. Judging by the 1881 census these are Arthur's parents.

Tricky one this but with the multitude of misspellings and mistranscriptions amongst both families I wouldn't be suprised if they were  married around 1895, when Arthur and Elizabeth were both about 18yrs old and it has been temporarily lost in transcription :). Assuming that your Elizabeth Gotheridge (Born Jun Qr 1875)was the daughter of William Gotheridge and Elizabeth Derbyshire  and NOT the illegitimate daughter (Born 1877)of Harriet Gotheridge, also of Church Broughton. Judging by the death registration of Elizabeth, in the Basford Dist 1932, I'd go for the former.

Thank you all for the very quick responses.

Mike - Can I ask what you checked?  Was this BMD or do you have access to parish records. I did think it might be on the local record and missed of the national return..  1911 census declaration states 16 yrs married putting it at 1895. But this could just be there to tie in with the eldest child. Thanks but I have all the census returns.

Trish - I concur that May appears to be with Grandparents, John and Elizabeth Tunnicliffe in Braislford.

Sergeant Cecil - I had Elizabeth as the one living with grandparents in1881?  Can you tell me what "...Judging by the death registration...in 1932...." leads you to the conclusion that it not? She seems to be pretty consistent about her age declaration in 1911 and 1901.

Thanks again.

Hello BigTB

I checked the online PR's with a variety of surnames and came up blank, otherwise it was the marriage index that was checked. The problem you have is that there are different ways of spelling the 2 surnames, although I've done thorough searches and it still comes up blank. The only other solution is the actual PR's at the Matlock record office.

Thanks Mike.
I appreciate all your efforts.

Matlock is a long way from me so that side of things will have to wait. :(
