Searching for Redford

My husband's family name has evolved over the years and I have found  it was Redford between 1770ish and 1830 but the spelling of Readford, Readfern, Redfearn and Redfern also appear which has made tracing this family very difficult

I am looking for a birth of Thomas Redford about 1770,  he married a Ann Hopper on 15th April 1790 in Richmond North Yorkshire.  All their children were born in Richmond between1791 and 1807.

I have no idea where Thomas was born or indeed how his surname was spelt at birth so would appreciate any suggestions as this is my  brick wall.

I am also looking for his death or that of Ann his wife as a grave may help

The NBI 3 covers burials at Richmond St Mary 1813-1919 & later.
There are only two Redford burials.
Thomas Redford age 70 buried 30th Apr 1824 (bc 1754) &
Mary Redford age 84 buried 21st Apr 1841 (bc 1757)

Unless you have evidence that Thomas was born c 1770 the above could still be him marrying age 36? in 1790. If Ann died between 1807 (last child) & 1812 this could be a remarriage for Thomas.
Thomas Redford & Mary Cowling married 16th Aug 1814 at Richmond near Leyburn (IGI).

The marriage between Thomas REDFORD and Mary COWLING does say he was a widower.  Maudarby could be on the right track.

Thank you both for this, really useful information and given my plenty to look at.  I don't live very far from Richmond so think a visit to the churchyard is in order!

I had found the marriage of Thomas Redford and Mary Cowling but had assumed it was a son born in 1792, (this Thomas was transported in 1814 for 7 years)

I wonder if Thomas senior was born in abt 1754 if he had been married prior to his marriage to Ann Hopper so will also look at that.

Just goes to show you should never rely on other people's family trees    I don't usually but was getting so frustrated with this family I did have a look at what was on Ancestry, although I should have known better as so many other facts are wrong.

The marriage between Thomas and Ann Hopper doesn't say he was a widower (I know this is not conclusive).  The witnesses were Wm. Moss and Martha Marshall. Both say of this parish.

There is an earlier marriage between Samuel REDFEARN and Dorothy CARNABY 2 Mar 1754 - maybe Thomas is their son??

The MIs for Richmond don't show any REDFORD or variations

I seem to have spent all day searching for this family and have come across a Thomas Redhead born 1755 in Richmond, father Thomas. 

I am wondering if this is a further twist to the family who seem to change their surname each century.

looks like a possible marriage as there are earlier baptisms - I think the first is in 1739

I don't know how you can decide if this is the right Thomas.  Good luck!!

Thanks Nannawilk your help is very much appreciated.   I haven't yet figured  how to work out which is the right Thomas, as you say they certainly like to keep us guessing.

I am wondering if a visit to Northallerton Records office is in order.

I just hope one day my other half will appreciate all this work, he thinks his contribution is taking photos of gravestones 

I think an evening searching old newspapers is in order
