Osfield/Horsfield/Orsfield TURNER b.1872
« on: Friday 17 June 11 14:09 BST (UK) »
Various spellings, birth record "Osfield"  Census and military WW! record "Horsfield" and also "Orsfield".

He was born in Royton Lancashire  England in 1872.  Know his wife and son's names, when he married and where and where he was living in 1911 (Shaw, Oldham). Also his parents names - Luke and Mary Turner.

He seemed to do various labouring type jobs, i.e. flagging etc.  I have searched the BMD for UK for a death but haven't found anything. He run off and left his wife and son (who was an adult, so think it was in the early 1930s) and was never seen again by his family (or so family folk lore goes).

He married Elizabeth Thomas and their only son was called Frank Turner who married Rosetta Champkin and had one son, another Frank born in 1929. His estranged wife died in 1950 in Oldham.

If anyone could help or point me in the right direction I would be eternally grateful, it is driving me mad trying to trace where he got to.
He served in the Balkans in WW! and was in his late 30s then, but after that - who knows what happened to him?  HELP pliease

Thanks, but no doubt I have the right Orsfield  Turner, he was my great aunt's husband, he was born in Thornham (Royton) and married Elizabeth Thomas and had the one son, Frank Turner.  Also as far as records go he only had the one name - Orsfield or Horsfield.

Many thanks for your response.  Regards.  Thombenn

lancsbmd has
1872 TURNER Osfield   Royton  Oldham     mothers maiden name Stott       ROY/23/57

Luke Turner and Mary Stott married in St Leonards church Middleton, Rochdale in 1867      CE20/8/289

Walter Turner christened 23rd feb 1868    ...Royton ...parents Luke and Mary
can`t find Osfields christening though....but the spelling on lancsbmd is definitely OSFIELD on his birth cert

can I also ask re WW1....he would have been 42 when the war started - and when it ended in 1918 he would have been 46...seems a little old ...have  you seen his war record ??

Frank Turner christened 24th October 1900 .Royton ..father ......Osfield ......

I think the marriage on freebmd is a mistranscription ,stating  - Orsfield

Every other record I have found ( 3 of them ) all state Osfield....

Many thanks for the responses.  Firstly I do think he was actually called ORSFIELD not Osfield as that is the way it was always prounced in family.  Secondly, the Walter Turner was his brother, son of Luke and Mary.  I also do think he was in WW! as he was in the labour corp and I should imagine it would be right for him (at his age too) he was into flagging, road works, labouring etc.

also on the 1911 census which he appears to have completed and signed, his name is definitely spelt ORSFIELD.

I just can't understand why I can't trace him any furthernot even a death record!  When he left his wife I think they were living in the Monton (Salford?) area, where did he end up??  Even wondered if he'd emigrated but that may be just a long shot, grasping at strawe.  Any help would be really appreciated,.   Many many thanks everyone   Thombenn

Hello.  This reply is to Thombenn.  My name is Helen Turner Morley and I live in Ontario, Canada.  I have just joined this site as of today and was very excited to see some of my ancestors names posted here.  My father was the person you spoke of that was born in 1929 to parents Rosetta Champkin and Frank Turner.  His birth date was September 11, 1929.  My father passed away on October 16, 2013 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada so I will have to ask my mother questions on the dates and people you spoke of.  I'm not quite clear on much of my fathers history, but I know that his father, Frank Turner, left my grandmother (Rosetta Champkin) when he was just 18 months old and was never heard from again.  I often wondered why a parent would do such a thing, but I quess he had his own reasons.  My grandmother lived a hard life but was a very strong person and did a wonderful job raising a child on her own in those days and times.  I hope to get a reply from this message soon.
