If it hasn't been mentioned yet, it appears that the 2nd Street address is for an apartment (or condo) building.  It was built in 1955.

I don't see Alice Wilson listed on the California Death Index.  ???

I didn't look at every entry, but I don't see a Pritchard living on 2nd Avenue, on the California voter regs.

Hi Lisa and Moorlands,

Thank you Lisa for checking the directories - Alice Wilson is on the California death index but unfortunately it gives no Mother's Maiden Name or Father's Last Name !!

http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/death/search.cgi

Haven't found William on any Census, Lisa - there was an entry in  1900 - Supervisors District 2, Contra Costa, California for a William Pritchard - August 1868 Wales - Single/Farm Labourer but had discounted him. There is also a William 1863 or1870 Wales with a Maude in 1920/30 but can't get them to fit - Maude seemed to have been married previously, was under Dotson  as a 2 nd marriage in 1910 with children of the surname Rettberg.

So far, have only proved Mary Ann Grant/ Cox was not William's daughter but was she some other relation ?
Charles George Grant (father of Mary Ann Cox) was born Gilfach Goch, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales and that does seem to have a significance.

I didn't find William in America, either.  I did see the Contra Costa census.

If the father used to go home to Wales often, we should be able to find him returning to the states?

I tried searching for the "second" William, but since he may still be alive, it's difficult to know where he might be living now.  (He may not have remained in California.)  I looked at his neighbours on East 2nd and apparently none of them were living there in 1996 (when he was).

Is there a common misspelling for Pritchard?  I'll have another look after work today.

PS  I also tried looking for a Bill Pritchard...no luck.

HI Lisa,

This is the father Richard in 1871 Llansannor, Glamorganshire, Wales.  (not sure where William is )

Richard Prichard 28 - Amelia Prichard 24
Alice Prichard   3 - Lizia Prichard   1

This is the father re-married on the 1901 UK Census in Civil parish - Llantrisant-  Town: Gilfach Goch. Glamorgan

Richard Pritchard 58 Born Herefordshire. Coal Miner
Erna Pritchard    57 Born Bristol
Georg Amos    35 Step-Son
Charles Phillips    50 Boarder

Haven't come across Richard on UK Census between 1871 - 1901. Have seen a passenger list 22 June 1880 for a Richard Pritchard which would fit nicely but the invisible William is not with him !!  Not sure when this 2 nd marriage has taken place - haven't come across that one either.

Unless it is EMILY Amos to Richard Pritchard March 1888 - Cardiff - 11 a 372 !!

As I'm looking for Richard, William, Alice and Mary Ann I can't help but wonder if the story is slightly different that what you have been told.  (I hope you don't take offense, I'm trying to offer other ideas.)

My dad used to tell me that one branch of our family lived in England a short time (arriving from France, and sailing to Canada after a few months or years).  After years of research, I've found out that the branch was in England at least 120 years.  While I listen to family history, I don't expect it to be totally accurate.

I was also told that our ancestor's first name was William.  Years later, I found out I should have been looking for a James, not a William.

I know you've given us all of the information you were provided, but is there by chance any little detail that you've not thought important, that could help find a lead?  :-\
