As I'm looking for Richard, William, Alice and Mary Ann I can't help but wonder if the story is slightly different that what you have been told. (I hope you don't take offense, I'm trying to offer other ideas.)
My dad used to tell me that one branch of our family lived in England a short time (arriving from France, and sailing to Canada after a few months or years). After years of research, I've found out that the branch was in England at least 120 years. While I listen to family history, I don't expect it to be totally accurate.
I was also told that our ancestor's first name was William. Years later, I found out I should have been looking for a James, not a William.
I know you've given us all of the information you were provided, but is there by chance any little detail that you've not thought important, that could help find a lead?
