Marriage in Glenravel RC Church
« on: Friday 17 June 11 11:21 BST (UK) »
Some years ago someone partially transcribed the marriage entry for my 3x gt grandparents and passed the information to me i.e.

Glenravel RC Church. Francis Duffin and Rose Walsh married on 13 February 1841 witnessed by John Duffin and ? Duffin.

Does anyone have any more information relating to this entry, particularly the name of the second witness or townland if it is mentioned?

Thank you

Hello Maggie...

Had a quick look on www.rootsireland.ie and there is indeed a marriage for Francis Duffin and Rose Walsh in 1841. The area in which the marriage took place is Ballymena (RC). If you buy this, it will give you hopefully the name of the second witness, which I think could be female and also both their fathers and where Francis and Rose are from. Also here are four children by these parents:

James Duffin 1849
Sarah Duffin 1852
Ellen Duffin 1854
John Duffin 1856

These births are registered in Glenravel (Skerry)

Hope that this helps in some way.

Annie
The surnames, which I am interested in are; Maternal side: Ryan, Kevin, Grant, Grady, Gleeson, Walsh, Dwyer, Paternal side: O' Dwyer, Woodlock, Rochford & Britton - all in Tipperary; and Kelly and Hoynes in Laois.

Ryan, Campbell, Luttrell, Grant, Grahame, Bainbridge and Brown in Queensland, Australia

Tighe in Victoria, Australia.

Grant in Philadelphia, Sullivan and Penny in New York; and Britton in Connecticut

Thanks Annie

The record shows his brother Michael was the second witness.

Problem with Townland. Record says Cruckanully. There is no such place on any map that I can find, only Knockanully or Crooknahaya. Most of the other information I have relates to Knockanully or Brae, where they lived in 1862. Can anyone tell me where Cruckanully is?

Hi...no bothers at all. Always willing to help. I would say the townland has been mistranscribed and it is Knockanully.

Pre-registration marriages usually don't give much detail so parents may not be listed.

I suspect that the townland transcribed as 'Cruckanully' might actually read Cnockanully.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Griffiths valuation shows a Francis Duffin at Brae townland,Parish of Skerry, date 1862.
On the map, Brae is immediately adjoining Knockanully.
James Duffin is living at Gortnagerragh and John Duffin at Knockanully also 1862.

In Gaelic "cnoc" means a small hill (no more than 1,000ft high, say).
It is frequently Anglicised as "knock".

The old form might well have been used prior to the 1830s, when the spin off from the Ordnance Survey Memoirs rationalised the spelling.
WHITTLEY - Donegore, Ballycraigy, Newtownards, Guernsey, PALI
WHITTLE - Dublin, Glenavy, Muckamore, Belfast; Jamaica; Norfolk (Virginia), Baltimore (Maryland), New York
CHAINE - Ballymena, Muckamore, Larne
EWART, DEWART - Portglenone, Ballyclare
McAFEE, WALKER - Ballyrashane
