He's quite consistent with his name and place of birth, 1860 Holywell Flintshire.

In 1901 they're at 38 Nelson St, so didn't move far.
on the marriage certificate in may 1883 they both claim to be 21 correct for her as I have her birth certificate, but I think you only need to put 21 or full? and in 1911 they are back in 7 nelson street, odd!

what's on the marriage cert?

Names of fathers, witnesses,
think you've now said the addresses, Nelson St and Back Croft St.
His father was Joseph Jones hers was John Stevenson of Padiham( no problem tracing his family back to 1432) the two witnesses were Thomas Young and Mary Vernon who married in 1885

No help with the witnesses then.    :-[

So you'll have to try a birth cert, specifying the father's name.   Although he could have been using a stepfather, or grandfather's name.    ooooh   so frustrating.

1881 census is free to search, and , I believe, can be searched by address.

Or you can look for your Elizabeth, and see if she is there, and if not then where she actually is!
any idea how you can search the census by address i have a subsciption with ancestry but have no idea how to search by address

Hi, tried specifying the fathers name on the online order form but they still sent it out with the wrong fathers name , but there's only two left in 1860 so i might as well carry on, just ordered the penultimate one ,still specifed the father just have to wait and see what happens, william

When you want them to check fathers name you must order it and say that you do NOT know the ref number- or that will override the rest.

It will then take you to another page where you can specify fathers name/or whatever.

You can't check censuses by address on Ancestry, except the 1881,only on Find My Past. What did it say his father did on the marriage cert?

Search for the parish and then go through the images one by one, seems a bit tedious and you have to remember that a parish boundary may be moved which means looking in an adjoining parish in different census years but it's useful to do, you can pick up neighbours and witnesses etc in the nearby houses and streets.

The lack of indexed addresses isn't the barrier some people believe it to be, prior to having indexed searchable name database sets census searching had to be done by trawling through the parish image by image.

Carol Hi,thanks for that, His father Joseph's occupation is hard to make out but possibly "joiner",as James is a bricklayer that might fit. also I cannot find any James Jones born 1860 ish in holywell with a father Joseph on any census at all, and therefore only pick him up at his marriage in 1883 in manchester, the shame of it is I lived with my Grandfather William Jones son of James, but never asked him ,wasn't interested then.William
