Condon, James, born Ireland 1846

James Condon is my GG Grandfather.  He was born in Ireland in approx. 1846 (1881 Census, Blackburn).  On the 1891 Census his wife Fanny (ms Frankham) was listed as Widow.  I assumed he had died between his last child born in 1889 and the 1891 census.   But..... on his son's marriage certificate in 1909 Fanny is named as "dec." but John isn't, so he must still be alive at that point. 

Word from the aunties is that he came from Cork.  I know his father's name is Michael and they were both shoemakers.  After Michaels name on the John's marriage certificate is says Shoemaker Journeyman.  John Condon later stated that he was a postman.  I've searched high and low for a death cert. for John Condon.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do next?

I would look for Michael Condon in Co Cork in the Griffith valuation taken 1851-53.

When do you think he went to England? Where did he marry? Where are they on the 1901 census?

Thanks for your reply.  I don't know at what age he came to Lancashire.  The first we know is his marriage in 1869 in the city of Lancaster.  in 1881 he was living in Blackburn, Lancs. and in 1891 he was presumably dead as his wife was listed as Widow. 

I do have one lead.  On his son's marriage cert. in 1909 he was not listed as deceased, but as Postman.  I am in the process of getting information from the British Postal Archives on his pension information.

I will try the Griffiths Valuation.

I found in IrishOrigins that I could look up the Griffiths Valuation so I did the free search for GGGrandfather Michael Condon.  there were about 60 of them.  My question is, before I spend the money on a 72 hour session, what information is given in the Valuation?  For instance, will it mention family members and occupation?  It wasn't too clear from the IrishOrigins website.

Griffiths Valuation gives the Name, Town or Townland, parish of individuals. it does not list families it does list the type of property that they owned, house land etc


Have you found James on the 1871 census?

Do you mean the English 1871 Census?  If so, I haven't.  John, my Ggrandfather would be married to Fanny Frankham by then, they married in Lancaster in 1869. 

As far as the Valuation goes, I don't think it would help because I know so little.

But there was no sign of John Condon anywhere?

I've just had the idea that maybe John Condon came over with his parents, instead of by himself which is what I have been basing all my searching on.  So if he came over sometime after his birth (about 1846), the family may be listed on the 1851 or 1861 census probably somewhere in Lancashire, possibly Blackburn or Lancaster as those were places he lived later on.  John was born in Ireland.  His father Michael was a shoemaker, the same as his son John.
