Not sure if this is any help to you, but,  years ago I was doing some research on Sir Thomas Fairfax - General during the English Civil War (1640s)

When I was in the reference library in York they had a book called, I think,  The Pedigree of Yorkshire Families. It consisted of loads of family trees of all the notable families, the Fairfaxes included.

I didn't take much notice of it at the time as my research was not genealogical (unlike now :)) I just remembered all these amazing fold out family trees.

Aynsley - Northumberland
Armstrong - Durham
Bell, Beaumont, Sunderland - Yorkshire
Scuffham - Linconshire and Yorkshire
Smith - Northumberland

Hi Icicle

We have a large reference section in Harrogate, I had a look on the computers and nothing specific shows up available for the Fairfax family to borrow so I'll go back and have a look in the reference section see if I can find the book you mentioned there might be a copy here, I'll take some paper and a pen along with me, some of the books in there are just too large and fragile to photocopy.

Thanks
Julie

Hi

Just to make sure I was not having a 'senior moment' I checked on Google.

The book is called A Pedigree of the County Families of Yorkshire. Author is Joseph Foster.  The Fairfaxes are in volume 1. It was published in 1874  :-\.

Good luck with your search

Hi Icicle

Thanks for the title of the book, will keep a look out for it, we have some Burke's Peerage books from c1880 so it's probably under lock and key in the same cupboard, I'm refering to the library just incase you thought I had a stash of rare books at home.

Regards
Julie

There is a pedigree of Fairfax of Walton on the "Visitations of the North, Part 4" which you can download here:

http://www.uiowa.edu/~c030149a/northern/surtees146text.pdf

In Part 3 are:

Fairfax of Gilling
Fairfax of Steeton
Fairfax of Walton and Gilling

http://www.uiowa.edu/~c030149a/northern/surtees133text.pdf

Also there are  biographies of Sir Guy Fairfax (d. 1495) and others in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography which you can access here if you have a Library Card and your Library subscribes:

Hope this helps.

Hi Jill

Having problems getting the links to work, virgin media being a pain again :'( will try again later.  Think I need to go on the Oxford website direct from my local library so will put the link on my memory stick for when I next go in.

Thanks for the links and the info

Julie

this message is for Icicle, I happened upon an old post of yours. I'm hoping you are still using this forum.
I am from NY but my family comes from Sligo. The parish crosses the Leitrim border. It's the parish of Killerry and Killenummery. I spend all of March there as well as June, July and August.
What is your connection to the area. I am quite familiar with the area and would be happy to help you if I can.
MaryAnn Horn
family names from the area are Mulrooney, Collins, Gallagher
