Thank you Stan for the information, I'm not sure if Thomas Branley adopted Ann and John's children. I know Ann Moss my great Grandmother died 22 June 1891 from chronic lead poisoning. Thomas Branley  married Catherine O'Hara and went on to have more children. I always thought my Grandfather was a Branley by birth, but it would appear not.
I'm doing my family tree not easy. My Mother was Lily Branley born Morpeth !922 Mum died in 1996 I have no siblings and no contact in the North East I know of so its  taking some time. Anyway thank you for your information.
Kind regards Lynn

Prior to 1927 there was no formal adoption process, so there was nothing to stop  Thomas Branley  calling his step-children Branley. Have you got that Thomas Branley married Janet Chapman in Tynemouth Dec ¼ 1900, 10b 467? If you get a copy of the marriage certificate it will show Thomas's father's name, to see if it is Hedley.
Thomas Branley and Janet Chapman went on to have five children; Robert; Ellen; Allen G; Norman; and Lily.

Hi Lynn

Many of us are researching families from the other end of the country or, in some cases, the other side of the world!

That's why RootsChat is so helpful - there is a lot of local knowledge out there   :)

Come back when you have more questions (and you will!)
