If that is the William Alexander Smith that died in 1953, he is buried in the Balclutha Old Cemetery.

You could try contacting the Clutha Council, their "contact us" is at the bottom of the page.

Janette / kiwihalfpint / New Zealander

Many thanks for your help - looks like this could be the right William Alexander.

His father Alexander was the brother of my 2x great grandmother, and the William name is his grandfather's name. Alexander and his brother David emigrated to New Zealand in 1859. The family originated in Fife. On arrival in NZ the family settled around the Balclutha / Waitepeka / Toiro area but I have had great difficulty in sourcing any information regarding their lives and any families they may have had.

So again thanks for your help.

New Zealander - will PM you a.s.a.p.

Thanks

There is a William Smith attended Otago Boys High School 1890-91(Dunedin)

The OBHS Centennial Register (1963) record him as a farmer at Waiwera and later Catlins Died Dunedin 1951

If this is a relative he could have been a boarder at Park House or Campbell House during 1890 & 1891

@SignalHill

Thanks for that. Interesting thought as it may be my Smiths who emigrated from Fife were agricultural laborers so I doubt if they went to such a school or were even boarders. As mentioned Williams father Alexander emigrated with his brother David. From much earlier posts on Rootschat concerning David's family I learned that one of David's children, thus a cousin of William, attended the primary school at Waitepeka near Balclutha. However, thanks for your input.

I can add perhaps my two bobs worth on this one.

On previous visits to not only Balclutha cemeteries but others in the district was assisting another Roots Chat member, Lil Terrier, chasing down the Smith family.  Late 2010 and early 2011.

I am aware that there is a lot of Smiths around .. or more then one Smith family !!!

Cheers
