lonergan,Durrow laois

Hello all,
        I am new to the posting on this board,so forgive me if i haven't quite got the hang of it.  Here goes!

My G.Grandfather Thomas Lonergan,born 1841/4 County Tipperary,no parish stated,in 1901 he lived with his wife Mary and children in Durrow Town parks laois
 in 1911 Patrick street Durrow,and he is buried with his wife in The Holy Trinity catholic church Durrow(I have photo's of their grave)there is no date of death,their son Thomas is also buried there 1896-1918 killed in the first world war.
My gran Mary(1st born) married Patrick Cashin of Durrow.
So here it is!I am stumped as to ,how do i find out where he comes from in Tipperary and where he married,I have no maiden name for his wife,she was born in kings county,but thats all I have(from the census)

It's going to be difficult to find the family of Thomas since he came from a different county, and before the start of civil records.  I would start with a search for the marriage... what's Mary's maiden name ?

The marriage cert (if they married after the start of civil records) would at least give you Thomas' father's name, which could help later if you find any possible baptisms for him. The problem is he could have been born in a parish were the records dont go back far enough..

Hello Shane,
          Thats my problem! I have no idea of her maiden name,  I wonder if they were married in The holy Trinity church durrow,My gran 's birth is registered at Abbeyleix,all i know of Thomas's wife is ,that she's from kings County I'm not sure where that is/where it covers,I noticed quite a few lonergans on the 1901/11 census in Ballyragget and wonder if they are connected to Thomas,but,as you can see,I am flummoxed

then I would start by searching for a birth cert for one of the children - youngest often has the most accurate age, and children with less common names are often easier to locate - e.g. in this case Julia age 3 in 1901 - just one good match between 1897 and 1899 - and it's the right area :

  Quarter and year:   Oct - Dec 1898
  Volume: 3 / Page :   246

 LONERGAN, THOMAS. Rank: Private. Regiment or Service: Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Unit: 4th Battalion. Age at death; 22. Date of Death:11-October-1918. Service Number; 18041. Formerly he was with the Royal Irish Regiment where his number was 4265. Born in Durrow. Enlisted in Kilkenny while living in Durrow. Died at the 23rd Casualty Clearing Station, France. Supplementary Information; Son of Thomas and Mary Lonergan, of Durrow, Queen's Co. After his death his effects and property were received by;- (Mother) Mrs Mary Lonergan, Chapel Street, Durrow, Queens County, Ireland. Grave or Memorial Reference: VII. B. 56. Cemetery: Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun in France.

Hi Enfield, Many thanks for the info........I already have a picture of his grave stone in Durrow and in France.Duisans cemetery .......... But remember reading his death was accidental....so thats the next step in finding out what happened.
