Trying to find a grave in Kirkcudbrightshire
« on: Saturday 11 June 11 19:35 BST (UK) »
Hi
I wonder if any of you can help me. I am trying to find the burial detail's for my great great grandfather Robert Allan who lived in a number of places in Kirkcudbrightshire and married a Margaret Corrie born in Kirkbean to Joseph Corrie. He was a surgeon by profession and qualifield at the University of Glasgow. The last place he resided was Dalry but he also lived in Crocketford with Margaret's family. I cannot find his birth or death record so any detail's re these two things might take me a little further into my tree.

record title: Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910
groom's name: Robert Allan
bride's name: Margarat Corrie
marriage date: 10 Sep 1836
marriage place: Urr,Kirkcudbright,Scotland

Thank you
Allan - Scotland, Lancashire, Wolverhampton
Corrie/Currie Kirkbean kirkcudbrightshire
Bradburn - Salford
Hamman - Cheshire
Vaughan -Wolverhampton
Worthington - Hulme
Brown - Hulme

Hello

According to the 1851 Census for Troqueer, Market Square

Margaret Allan age 41 b Kirkbean Pauper wife of Surgeon
John 15 b Kirkpatrick Durham
Elizabeth 13 b Rerrick
Mary 11 b Urr
Agnes 9 b Urr
Robert 6 b Kirkpatrick Durham

No sign of Robert Allan so did he die around 1845-1851? Kirkpatrick Durham?
Can find Margaret in 1861 and 1871 censuses.
Will see what the local papers throw up.

Lesley
Dumfriesshire-Green, Currie, Strong, Beattie, Dryden, Steel, Carmichael, Baird.
Ireland/Lanarkshire- Canavan, McConkey, Hillis
Ayrshire- Lang, Russell, Pollock

Lesley, wife Margaret shows as 'wife' in 1851, so Robert still alive. From a similar post on another forum, somebody posted an entry for Robert:

Robert Allan, 37, surgeon educated at Glasgow University b. Sarn (?Sorn) Ayrshire
Address: Back Street, Dalry

Nobody else showing on the entry other than Robert.

This was the closest I can see regarding Robert Allan and Glasgow University: www.universitystory.gla.ac.uk/biography/?id=WH7522&type=P  Worth reading through their notes to see whether there are possible further research resources to do with his matriculation at the University www.universitystory.gla.ac.uk/alumni/help/other-graduate-info/

I had a quick through this online book The matriculation albums of the University of Glasgow from 1728-1858 www.archive.org/details/matriculationalb00univuoft for the years 1834-37 but couldn't easily see anything relating to Robert Allan.

Also checked the UK Medical Register, which includes details on line from 1859 onwards - nothing there either  :-\

Hi
I think you are right that Robert is the surgeon in Dalry not living with his family.  I know that margaret lived with her family after 1861 and moved to Manchester after her mother died to be with her son Robert and daughter mary.

I have contacted the University but they have 3 Robert Allan's whom qualifield at that time but none of then born in Sorn (Sarn).

I believe that Margaret was buried back in Scotland with her husband but nobody know where the grave is.

I thank you so much for your help Lorna
