mother & baby home
« on: Saturday 11 June 11 14:11 BST (UK) »
A young unmarried woman gave birth to a baby at a mother and baby home at Edinburgh in 1922. The baby I believe was adopted. Is there any way I can find out about the baby, what sex it was, or of the adoptive parents and would the birth mother's name be on the birth certificate. I would be grateful for any advice.

You would need to have the mothers name, the name of the mother and baby home, year (or date) of confinement.

After that it will depend on searching for the registration on SP and/or whether the baby was adopted and by what agency (that's extremely difficult and still within the bounds of living person).

Hello Fifer,

I do have the mother's name and the name of the home, also the year and approximate month. I wondered if records would be available at the registrars office.

The birth should be registered with the birth mothers name

Adoption may have been organised privately at that time

It would depend on whether the child was registered in it's mothers name or adoptive parents.  Might be worth looking for it on Scotlands People http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/welcome.aspx

Use the year and mother's surname leaving the first name blank select Edinburgh and the area of the mother and baby home within Edinburgh.

Statutory adoption did not become legal until 1927 so with a bit of luck ........

Good luck!  ;D

ps
If you were adopted in Scotland:
Records can be obtained from the General Register Office for Scotland.

Thanks a lot Sancti & Fifer, you've both been a great help. I'll go along these lines and see if I can come up with anything.  :) :)
