Suz, I guess any relation to the iron smith Sharples would go further back.  I'll save that information away. 
Meanwhile, your new information looks very interesting.  I have to go out for a while but will study it when I return.  Thank you so much for your help.

My grandfather James Sharples was born 17th July 1888 to John Sharples and Elizabeth (nee Chew, later Walsh) He was a cotton weaver who married Ellen Whittaker in 1904. His half sister Ada married Thomas Farnworth.
