I'm looking for information on James Orr and Agnes Bell who married c1828. Agnes Bell's DOB c1804. I have James' DOB as 1st mar 1794? their children born in Lauder James, c1829, Agnes Ann c1830, William c1830 and Grace c1833. by 1838 they had moved to South Shields, Durham. James in the 1841 census and Agnes' marriage was a pavior.

Hello,

Probably you meant Lauder instead of Launder?  Nobody seems to be answering this query.  I have several Orrs and Bells in my tree but none of them came from Lauder.  Those surnames were very common in the Borders, lots of intermarriages with them.  Do you know where your James and Agnes were born, or have some other points of reference that would help to track them down?

Clezie (Clazie, Clezy, Clazy, Clazey, Claise, etc.), Lockhart, Heiser, Schwab, Tomon, Zarnowski, Megert, Iseli

Hi

sorry about the spelling, not my best subject, anyway the information above is all I have and no points of reference at all. On one census Agnes Ann said place of birth Edinburgh, but then every census she lied about her age!

thank

Agnes Orr is in the parish records and also on Familysearch but none of the other children are nor is there a marriage showing in the parish records.  Did  James and Agnes snr just say Scotland in the later census?

Hi Barbara

I only have James Orr in the 1841 census as he died 1847 and there its just Scotland as birth place. Agnes Bell emigrated to Melbourne in 1854, in the 1851 census again its just Scotland, but I have her birth place as Leith, not Lauder, but i don't know where i got that information. in the 1851 census James junior birth pace Berwickshire, William i have Lauderdale and Edinburgh in different censuses

Don't know if this helps or not but thought it worth a mention.....Family Search has 6 children born to a James Orr and Grizle/grizel/grizzel Mann

Andrew 22/10/1780 Melrose    Extracted
Christian 9/5/1782  Lauder      Extracted
Helen  7/1/1784 Lauder           Submitted
Thomas 7/1/1784 Lauder         Submitted
Charles  1/7/1787 Lauder        Submitted
James  1/3/1795  Lauder         Submitted

You have James's birth as 1/3/1794 so it could be, check age on 1841 census.

Hi terry

thanks very much. I too have found this information on family search, but as yet i don't have any evidence to back it up, the last 4 children including James have been submitted by someone else not extracted from the parish records.

thanks again

They may be submitted on the IGI but they are also on Scotlandspeople.gov.uk as parish records so they do exist.  And as James called his second daughter Grace which is the same name as Grizzel, and his first son James it looks very very likely they are his parents.  You have heard of the Scottish naming patterns?
First born son after father's father
second son after mother's father
first daughter after mother's mother
second daughter after father's mother.

It is not infallible but a great help at times and in your family definitely!
