Hi Lynne

It's complicated, but I may well be from a long-lost branch of the family. :)

I understood all ten children were born in Auckland but John's birth c.1888 doesn't seem to be listed on the NZ Births Deaths & Marriages site.

Unfortunately I can't PM you because I've only just registered on this messageboard. Perhaps you could PM me? Or email me on (*)

OK, this is post#3. For the record the death certificate of Frederick Henry DYER (1867-1937) indicates that he was the son of James DYER (variously spelled DWYER) and Isabella POOLE.

As young Frederick is named as a "neglected child" in the Auckland Star court reports of 5/3/1877 I would infer that the marriage was not a happy one.

The NZBDM web site indicates that James and Isabella had another son named Arthur in 1865, who may have died young.

As the marriage wasn't until 1890 was Montague Esther's maiden name or previous marriage

just wonder because of this birth in1888
1888/945 Montague  John  parents: Ether and John

I now have the birth certificate for this John MONTAGUE. Mother's maiden name is given as Ether WOOD, age 26, born Woolwich (c. 1862). So, not the same Esther MONTAGUE (born c. 1869) who married Frederick Henry DYER in 1890. This still leaves us with a missing birth record for John DYER (1889?-1954), which again leads me to wonder if he may have been adopted.

Hello David,
I have Johns death cert it says he was born in Auckland and that he was an Invalid, I had a look on the online BDM but couldn't see any Johns born at that time,  may have to go to the library and look at the fiche's there. With Arthurs death cert not much on there.
