Cooke family in Spilsby Lincs
« on: Thursday 09 June 11 08:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for my great grandmother and I wonder if anyone can please help me look her and her family up in Spilsby, Lincolnshire please.
Her name is Matilda Cooke and she was born about 1822 in Spilsby I think and her father's name was James Cooke. Matilda married in 1850 to William Lacey in Shoreditch, London. I have found her marriage. According to a later census, she was listed as being from Spilsby and this is the only clue I have to her birth.
This is taking up a lot of time but I still haven't found her., can anybody please help?  Kind regards Cockneygirl.

Hello Cockneygirl,

A new website, Lincs to the Past, has copies of original registers online and free to view.

I had a look for Matilda, but couldn't find her baptism in Spilsby.

I looked too at her marriage entry, and it looks like one of the witnesses could have been Olivia Cooke?

If that's right, this could possibly be Olivia's baptism, to a James and Sarah Cooke, 15 May, 1819 at Spilsby - also shows James occupation as gardener -  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0do6/

Hi,
Thankyou so much for your help, I think you might be right about Olivia, I did try to decipher that name without any success, but I think you have cracked it. Thankyou also for the link to the site.
I shall now try looking for Matilda with parents James and Sarah.
Kind regards, Cockneygirl
