how do you link relatives??
« on: Thursday 28 April 05 16:59 BST (UK) »
you helped me find my gt gt grandfather Thomas. I applied for his marriage certificate and his father was Ralph Heald Thomas was 20 years old when he married at Leeds Parish church.
in 1855.
Now all the Healds came from North Leeds they have all lived within a few streets of each other..even my own father today still lives in the same area.

The only Ralph in N.Leeds died age 1.  the other Ralph lived in Rothwell..
i just don`t see him having any connection to my family..
how do i link a relative..when it has now gone beyond the census and certificate boundaries..

i am at a complete loss..
any help would be very grateful
very best regards
julles ??? ???

Hi,

Have you found the family group on the 1841 census?

If not I would start there.  If Thomas has younger sibblings born after the start of civil registration in 1837 you can send off for their birth certificate.  This would give you the mother's maiden name and the place the family were at that time.

The next step would then be Parish registers.

Is it possible that Ralph was the Father's middle name?

Hope this gives you something to work with

Hi Julles

What exactly does it say on the marriage certificate  ???  Post all the details inc. occupations, addresses, witnesses etc. and perhaps somebody can spot something or come up with another idea or two?

Best wishes

HI,

You are right the information on the 1841 is limited.  For place of birth it is just within the census county or not.

However if you are sure the family will be in the same area, you should be able to identify Thomas with his Father, particularly as you say he is most unlikely to have a name other than Ralph.

If you are going to be looking through Parish registers it may help to know the names of others in the family group.

Good luck with your search

HI,
I DID AS YOU ADVISED AND LOOKED ON THE CENSUS..I LOOKED ON THE 1851 WHEN MY GT GT GRANDDAD WAS 16.

HIS FATHER IS RALPH HEALD AGED 49 AND HE WAS BORN IN MIDDLETON.
HIS WIFE IS ELIZABETH HEALD AGE 48 B. KIRKBURTON
WILLIAM SON  AGE 23 B.LEEDS
HARRIET DAU  AGE 20 B.LEEDS
THOMAS  SON AGE 16 B.LEEDS
GEORGE SON  AGE 13 B. LEEDS

AND THE BEST THING OF ALL IS THAT THEY  WERE LIVING IN LEEDS NORTH...NO ADDRESS RECORDED..
IT PUTS THEM RIGHT BACK IN THE RIGHT NEIGHBORHOOD..
SO RALPH MUST HAVE BEEN BORN  IN 1802 ISH.
DO YOU THINK I AM ON THE RIGHT TRACK ????
ALL HELP MUCH APPRECIATED

BEST REGARDS

Hi,

Everything seems to point in the right direction.

You could even try for George's birth certificate as he should be included in the civil registration.

I would still be tempted to look for the family on the 1841.  The eldest child on the 1851 is 23.  They could have had more children who had left home by 1851.  If you can find the date of birth for the first child it wil help narrow down any search for the parents marriage date.

Hi Julles

Perhaps Rothwell does have some significance:

Ralph son of John & Isabella HEALD of Middleton baptised at Rothwell Holy Trinity 28 Nov 1802.

It's certainly worth thinking about.

http://www.familyhistoryonline.net

Like Sue suggests, I would definitely try to find the family in 1841 and then the baptisms for Thomas & his siblings but it looks like you're on the right track  :D

Best wishes
