Hello!

I am not too sure which board to post this thread on, as I am looking for a information on George Dickeson, born in London, and Jane Merratt, from Stockport.  ???

I was wondering if anyone had any information on George Dickeson, born c1803 in London, possibly St Andrews. I have a marriage record for him marrying a Jane Merratt in 1823 at Manchester Collegiate Church, and am going to send for a copy of this. Although we believe he was originally from London, most of his children were born in Stockport, which suggests links to the area - perhaps through his spouse. I think I have discounted the marriage record for George Dickeson and Jane Martin in St Anne's Middlesex on the 23rd March 1823, as I have traced this family and it does not seem to be the one I'm looking for - although they could be relations. His occupation is consistently listed as Calico or Silk Printer, suggesting he may have travelled up North for work.

As I do not have a marriage record for him, I do not know the names of his or his spouses parents, or where they were from originally. There are some public trees which name his father as Joseph Dickeson and his mother as Elizabeth Eyre, however these are unsourced and those I have contacted to establish where they found this information have not replied.

With the help of the Local Heritage Museum in Stockport, I have found a Christening record for their daughter, Sophia, who was born in 1828. I have also found a record for Edward Dickeson, however he does not appear in any censuses, indicating he may have died at a young age.

I have not yet found birth/baptism records for their other children, who are listed as being born in Stockport:

Emma b c1831
George b c1833
Thomas b c1835

I have however been advised that not all records from this time of have been transcribed or indexed, and so I would need to either visit the area or pay for someone to research this for me.

Charlotte, b c1838, is listed on the 1841 census as having been born in Lambeth, where the family were now living. She does not appear with the family on any later censuses, and I am unable to find a baptism, Birth BMD or Death BMD record for her.

John, b c1843, was born in Lambeth. I have a possible BMD entry for him: Jan-Feb-Mar 1843, Lambeth, and I have just ordered this certificate. I have been unable to find a baptism record for him so far. I do have a marriage record for him: 12th March 1862, St George the Martyr, Battersea (where the family were now living). Father George Dickeson, Silk Printer, is listed as deceased. His spouse's name was Jane Brooks.

Some of the unsourced public trees mentioned earlier list his spouse as a Jane Bradley, although I cannot find records for this marriage. Once again, I would be interested in finding out where this information comes from, as a Bradley married in to the family much later.

I have the family from 1841 onwards.

I would appreciate any advice or information on how to proceed; stuck on this one!

Thankyou for reading  :D

Not sure if you have these

Lambeth St Mary
1852 May 31, Emma, adult d/o George & Jane DICKESON, 1 Norfolk Row, Printer

Kennington St Mark
1854 Apr 2, Charlotte, d/o George & Jane DICKESON, Hemmings Road, Printer

Looks like adult baptisms for both.

Hello!

Thankyou Ian C, I hadn't seen those... because all of the rest of the family were baptised as babies, I didn't think to look for adult baptisms. It's interesting to find a record for Charlotte as she does not appear on the 1841 or 1851 census with the rest of her family. That is definitely a record for Jane, as the 1851 census shows them living at Norfolk Row.

Valda - thankyou for finding the 1861 census for me; I hadn't considered a remarriage and so hadn't found this one. Interestingly the surname Cooper comes in to the family later as well, through marriage. Fascinating to see Georges father Thomas listed as a Gold Beater, which sounds like a very skilled profession. I'm sure I have a Frances Ballard listed as a witness to something else... will go through all records and find it, will bug me otherwise!

Thankyou for your help :D

I just searched for Gold Beater, and it came up with a link to a topic on here where someone was looking for a relative. Following the advice on that thread, I have contacted the Goldsmiths Guild (spoke with the Librarian), who has advised me to email in with all details, however sketchy, and they will search for him! She did say that they didn't have many records on Gold Beaters or apprenticeships, but it's worth a try once I have some more information!

Hi

George may have been inflating his father's profession slightly or the Ballard surname appearing on this marriage may be a coincidence.

10th January 1842 St John the Baptist, Hoxton
William Bunkum Full Age Bachelor Smith Turnmill Street Blank
Hannah Remington Full Age Widow Turnmill Street Thomas Dickeson (Deceased) Tinman
Both made their mark
Witnesses Maria Johnson her mark
Wm Ballard

First married Charles Remington 12th June 1833 St Leonard's Shoreditch.

There are baptisms between 1818 and 1832 for a Thomas Dickenson/Dickeson, tinman and wife Jane, in Whitechapel, St George the Martyr Southwark and St Andrew Holborn.

My family exaggerating?! Never.....  ::)  ;D

Will look in to these, they certainly sound promising! This is the furthest back I have got on any of  my lines - I only set out to find out who the Aunties/Cousins/Uncles that my Nan and her sisters remembered were, and how they were related! It's fascinating but addictive!

Thankyou Valda :)

Hello!

From searching the baptism records for London pre 1812, I have found two families with the Father listed as Thomas.

The first is Thomas and Sarah Dickenson/Dickinson. They appear to have had:

Mary b1798, St Paul, Deptford. No occupation and a different address than listed on the next 5.
Ann b1799 (baptism 1800), St Paul, Deptford. Fathers occupations: Victualler
William b1801, St Paul, Deptford. Fathers occupation: Victualler
Mary Ann b1802, St Mary, Whitechapel - no occupation
Elizabeth b1803, St Paul, Deptford, Kent. Fathers occupation: Victualler
James b1805, St Paul, Deptford. Fathers occupation: Victualler
Henry b1806, St Mary, Whitechapel. No occupation given.

Scratch that - have just found a record for a George Dickeson b1810 - birth date listed as Jan 6th.
Father listed as Thomas and mother listed as Sarah; address is Roadside which is the same as Henry b1806. This can't be him as the marriage record I have for him is 1823; their first child was born 1828.

The second family is Thomas and Elisabeth Dickenson/Dickinson

Mary baptised 10th May 1808 (birth date listed as April 14th)
Alice baptised 19th June 1808 (birth date listed as 12th August 1802)
Ann baptised the same time (birth date listed as March 3rd 1805)
All at St Leonard Shoreditch.

Also Mary, Daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, same address, baptised 1811 in Leonard Shoreditch.

As they baptised all of the children in a short period - 2 on the same day who were already 3 and 6 years roughly, perhaps they had moved from St Andrews, Holburn.... and didn't baptise George for some reason?

I have found a George, son of Thomas and Frances baptised 1794... but I think this is too early.

I'm not too sure where to go from here...   ???

Alice
