Enrolment numbers and kit - Sheffield and Grimsby
« on: Wednesday 08 June 11 19:59 BST (UK) »
If you lived in Grimsby or Sheffield which army regiment would you have likely joined?
I have a knife issued to John (Jack) Brannon number on it 963058, who I think lived in Sheffield area, and a pair of woolly underpants issued to a man surname Shaw from Grimsby number 1144302.
Were the numbers consecutive to the individual regiment, or nationwide?

I think we are talking WW2 era here?
Its pretty impossible to guess as records are still held by MOD for these guys BUT you can request a search and copy of records(£30 each) for them you would have to have a death cert unless Next Of Kin
You have basic info as in Service number

The Veterans Agency website has the forms.

The Service number for the second guy looks more like a ww2 Army number the 1st one Could be Great War but the Medal Index Cards show no-one with that number.

Regiments could be East Yorkshire,York and Lancaster,West Yorkshire,Lincolnshir Regiment  or if they were conscripted any Regiment.

There arent any / between the numbers are there?

963058 has two possibilities. The least likely is that it is from the 1917 re-numbering of the Territorials, as it would fall in the batch allotted to 1/7 and 2/7 London Brigades RFA (later known as 237 and 302 Brigades).

The more likely scenario is that they are from the batch allotted to the Royal Horse & Royal Field Artillery, when the whole system was changed in 1920. I can't tell you though when and where they were issued.
