If he was in the army then his records will still be with MOD Archives.
Its possible to request a copy free to next of kin with proof of death ie Death Cert but £30 for everone else.
It may take a few months.

i've searched some more but can't find anything that matches.  How old was he on his marriage cert?  It might be that his birthdate is wrong on the death cert 

Have you considered the registration that Rosie found:

The nearest birth with a mothers maiden name of Spencer (ie possibly illegitimate) is
December qtr 1919 Cyril  Spencer (mothers maiden name Spencer)  Skipton  9a 57

Hi gnu Cyril was 25 on his Marriage cert Which would have made him 26 in the October making His birth date right He was supposed to have been in the army but cannot find him there either.
