Confused about census record - birth place
« on: Tuesday 07 June 11 00:03 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm trying to trace my great-great grandfather. I have found him on the 1891 Census but I'm not sure about how to go about finding details of his parents and his birth. He unfortunately has a common name, Charles Richardson and I'm not sure what to make of his birth place.

RICHARDSON       Charles       Sonlaw       Married       M       29       Accountant Clerk(Em'ee)
and under place of birth it reads: Not Kn(crossed out) Imsson abroad Co. plot st.

I'm assuming Not Kn is not known but I have no idea what to make of Immson etc, I don't suppose anybody has any ideas?

Thank you ever so much for reading this!

Hello and welcome to RootsChat

You could purchase the marriage cert -which would give you father's name and occupation (unless illigit) witnesses are sometimes family members too.
It seems Eana was illegit . She is described as "daughter in law" in 1891 -meaning "step daughter"

Marriage FreeBMD
Charles Richardson
Edna Sycamore
Dec qtr 1890
Freebridge Lynn 4b 889

Edna 's birth was registered in name of "Eana"-I think.

Oh that's fantastic!  ;D

Thank you to all of you! I will definitely order that marriage certificate.

It makes much more sense now, I assume he was born abroad but to British parents? Would country not known mean he didn't know the country or it just wasn't required to be recorded?

So far, I haven't had much trouble with the rest of the family but very little is known about him. My great-great grandmother remarried 2 years after my great-grandmother was born and he was alleged to have run off to Canada!

Thank you again!

What it means is that the person giving the info. didn't know where he was born.Charles may not have been there at the time.
I notice Aldina Sycamore is still with G/parents in 1901,Where's Eana?

Ah, that makes sense - it may have been his (step)father-in-law.

This part of the story I do know!

She remarried to a James Reeve in 1894 and moved to East Winch and she has 2 children with him by 1901. She then marries again in 1903 and has another 3 children.

Suzard is right,Ena was illegitimate as were her brother Frederick & sister Aldina. They spent most of their growing up in the workhouse (1871-81 cen.)Their over-friendly mother was Susan Sycamore.

Oh that's really interesting. I think it may possibly have been a case of like mother like daughter!

This is an exciting branch of my family tree! Charles is the first person who may have been born outside East Anglia let alone the UK!
