WW1 Memorial Oldbury William George Bastable
« on: Monday 06 June 11 21:28 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know if there is a war memorial with my grt grandfathers name on. He is William George Bastable from Tat Bank, Oldbury and all I know is that he died at Ypres on the 4.7.1917. If anyone knows anything about how he died or if there is a local memorial with his name on I would be grateful to hear from you.

Thanks Dawn

I'm not sure about the location of Oldbury war memorial, but there is a William George Bastable listed on the Menin Gate at Ypres http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=926918 If this is your great grandfather, the listing on the CWGC also includes the names of his parents and wife.

Hopefully someone will be along soon who can help with a more local memorial - as far as I know all fallen soldiers were listed on their local one.

Yes, there was one - I'm guessing it's still there - in Oldbury town square http://blackcountryhistory.org/collections/getrecord/GB146_PHS_909/ The link is to a b&w photo of it. No mention of names, but the local library might be able to help with that.
