Otty / Nurse
« on: Monday 06 June 11 15:35 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage between Thomas Otty and Rose Nurse that took place in North Barsham,Norfolk on 16.05.1732.This is probably a dead end on my wifes tree but for the fact that the marriage took place in North Barsham. All the children of Thomas and Rose were baptised in Weybourne, and Thomas and Rose were both buried in Cley,so is this the correct marriage?
Does anyone have an answer to this

Welcome to Rootschat Norfolkboy :)

Sorry I cant explain that but they may have been working in the area possibly.

There is a Rose NURSE Baptised 16 August 1703, St Peter and St Paul, Swaffam, Norfolk to THOS/ROSE
+ a THOS 1705 to them also;
This Thos may go on to Baptise Children in Weybourne also, including a Rose 1729.

The Marriage of Rose/Thomas is also on FreeREG with Thomas down as OTLEY

Not sure if you have checked FreeREG but there are Burials of Otty Children eg Joanna 1737/Eleanor 1732, and lots of other records also.

Hopefully someone has other info for you.
Trish :)

how far apart are these places?

have you seen the actual parish register entries or just the on-line transcriptions?- sometimes the actual entries will give extra info or hints

Have a look in the parish they were married in for possible baptisms of the couple -- maybe they moved to a new village soon after they married

Thomas Otty was baptised in Bodham August 1689 but i do not have the baptism for Rose. Nurse is a Weybourne / Kelling name, and the fact that all 10 of their children were baptised in Weybourne Church convinces me that she came from the village. Both Thomas and Rose were buried in Cley,4 miles from Weybourne, and the parish register states that Thomas was a customs officer,so i assume that this is where he was stationed, what puzzles me is that if this is the correct marriage why travel 16 miles from Weybourne to get married in 1732 ? or is this possibly a different marriage and a coincidence.

16 miles isnt too far for one or other of them to have been living & working there before the marriage

i would certainly consider the marriage you have found a possibility

Hope that people here get automatic updates on their posts.  I have a transcript of the will of Johanna Nurse mother of Rose Nurse/0tty which is fascinating but which I cannot upload. Its from the church records held in the Norwich Records Office.   Contact me if you would like a copy.    I am interested in any information taking this line back earlier than Johanna Nurse.
