Lamont can also be written as Lamon, Lammond, Lemmon, Lemon, etc.

Good grief...they certainly dont make this genealogy thing easy !!!

Hi Joy,

We might be related. My maternal grandmother was Margaret Lamon (t) from Magherafelt born 1908. Your Margaret could be an aunt or great aunt or grandmother of hers. I haven't looked at it yet. Just got excited when I read your posts. Hope to hear from you soon.  Thank you.   :)

Welcome to Rootschat, Padraigan. Joy hasn't been online since January 2012 but we might be able to help you find details on your family, although Lamont is not an uncommon name in the area.

I had a look at the 1911 census but couldn't pick out your grandmother from the details in your post. There's a 3 year old Maggie Lamont in Gorteade (Upperlands)-

... and another near Tobermore-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you for the welcome Aghadowey ! The Maggie from Ballinahone More is my maternal grandmother. Not living in Ireland, the furthest back I could go on the Lamont side was Maggie's great grandfather George showing in the 1796 Flax Grower's List but that's all I know.  I would love to find out his wife's name & whether or not he is my ancestor who fled from France during the Revolution or ... could it have been his parents ? Are there any records that you know of ? Apparently they were Huguenot's. I don't know if that makes any sense or not. I am told through a Lamont group on Face Book that many Lamonts left Scotland & went to France. Thanks very much. I wish I would have found you a lot sooner !  Patricia

p.s.  My maternal grandfather William James Leslie is from the same area. Not sure of his exact birthplace although his death record states that it is Castledawson. Years ago when I sent for his birth record .... they couldn't find one. His parents and many other family members are buried at the Castledawson Presbyterian Church yard. His family lived at Leslie's Hill in Derrygarve.

Hi Joy,
I live in British Columbia, Canada. Margaret went with her parents and four of her siblings to Canada in 1927. Her oldest brother went to Australia and the others stayed in Ireland.   Patricia   :)

My mother-in-law had Lamont connections but they were Reformed Presbyterian- I've onyl traced them back to 1800ish.

When would he have been born? there are quite a few William Leslies in Derrygarve townland in 1901 but by 1911 they don'e seem to be listed.
