Castledawson C of I Ballyscullion Magherafelt

Would anyone know the correct location to start looking for records for
Castledawson Church of Ireland Ballyscullion Magherafelt where my great grandparents were married in 1879

John Doherty{Dogherty/Dougherty} (born C 1855/56 from Boom Hall Londonderry)
Married
Margaret Lamont (born C1855/56 from Magherafelt)
on 12th November 1879


I was planning to visit the area in the next few weeks ( I live in Belfast) to see if I could unearth some more information locally, but I've been told that the church name is a bit confusing  because the name Ballyscullion is linked with Castledawson and they are actually two separate parishes.
I have been given the email address for a local person who might be able to help, but thought I'd also check here in case anyone can help.

Thanks for the link aghadowey. I'd actually used it to contact a few churches, and thats when I established the confusion about the name of the church.

Castledawson parish was only formed in 1875 out of townlands originally part of either Ballyscullion and Magherafelt parishes.  The new parish church had previously been a chapel of ease for the Moyola estate, used by Lord Moyola's family and estate workers. 

Castledawson baptisms from 1846 to 1885 and burials up to 1877 are microfilmed in PRONI and Coleraine Library, but all other records are still held by the rector.  Pre 1863 records for the parish church of Ballyscullion were destroyed in the PRO fire in Dublin and the records since then are still held by the parish.  Magherafelt Parish records from 1716-1895 are microfilmed in PRONI and Coleraine Library - more recent records in parish custody

   To add to the confusion I have a record of the marriage of John Dougherty to Margaret LAMON in Castledawson Church of Ireland, Parish of Ballyscullion, on 12 Nov 1879.

Hi Kingskerswell.... these are the same people even though the 'address' of the church is described slightly differently ...hopefully this help me pinpoint the correct church now.

Hello Joy,

While I have not researched the Castledawson C of I records I have researched the records of the Magherafelt Church of Ireland.

I have an entry for Margaret Lamon, daughter of James and Anne Lamon of Anaghmore, baptised at the Magherafelt COI on December 2, 1855.

This may be the last who married John Dougherty.

Oh My Goodness Ronalddale100...the plot thickens !!!

I've only really been looking into the Dogherty/Dougherty/Doherty side of the family till now so have not researched the Lamon(t)'s.

The (mis)spelling for Margaret Lamon(t) and the date  I have for  her  DOB (using  the 1901 & 1911 census ) is either 1855 or 1856  which seems to tally with your information.

It's not uncommon to find spelling variations for names- Lamont can also be written as Lamon, Lammond, Lemmon, Lemon, etc.
