Catholic marriage in New York
« on: Monday 06 June 11 10:48 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am looking for the marriage of Henry McCluskey and his wife Margaret in St Patrick's Cathedral in New York in 1903 or 1904. Both were from Co Cavan in Ireland. They emigrated to Scotland shortly afterwards.

If anyone can find their marriage and Margaret's maiden name I'd be extremely grateful.

Thanks, Lucy.

There are indexes for marriage records for New York City at www.italiangen.org.  I don't see anything that quite matches your couple, but there is a Henry J. McClosky who married in Manhattan (where the well-known St. Patrick's cathedral is) on 20 Dec. 1903.  His wife's name is listed as Lauretta McClosky.  Usually, the wife is listed by maiden name, so it's odd to have another McClosky there.

Do you have Henry on any passenger lists going to or from the US?  Maybe that would give some clues as to the time frame of the marriage or if he was travelling with Margaret to the US.

Hi

Thanks for your reply! I'm not sure that's the right marriage as the Henry McCluskey we have married a Margaret.

I have found Henry's arrival in New York on Ellis Island on 12 Oct 1903 and I can find his arrival back in Scotland in 1904. According to the 1911 census they had been married for 7 years. So at some point during his stay in New York he got married. I am told that they married at St Patricks Cathedral.

The 1911 census states that they were born in County Cavan in Ireland.  I really need the marriage record so that I can find out some more detail.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful, thanks.

The passenger list seems to indicate that he went to Newark, New Jersey, so perhaps he married in New Jersey.  Unfortunately, New Jersey has less information online than New York.  It does appear that there's a St. Patrick's cathedral in Newark, so they might not have married in the famous one in New York City.

Do you have death records for either of these folks?

Hi Lucy, my grandparents were Henry McCluskey and Margaret, nee Tinnion (sp), who came from Cavan and were married in St Patricks, New York, they moved to Scotland where they settled, my Dad, Thomas was the youngest member of the family, my grandparents and other family members had passed away long before I was born, and now there are no surviving members of their immediate family, my dad passed away a long time ago as well so have very little information if this is the correct family you are seeking information about.

Sorry meant to add my dad was the youngest and their was a large age gap between him and his next sibling, I have cousins but only know the whereabouts of two of them, most of my cousins were around the same age of my dad and presume most have past away by now.
