Humphrey(s) Family Whitewell
« on: Monday 06 June 11 09:38 BST (UK) »
I am trying to establist a relationship between a Margaret Humphrey born 22/3/1875 daughter of Adam Humphrey and Sarah Gray. She was brought up by a relation a Robert John Humphreys born around 1867 believed to be from the Whitehouse area. He married a Margaret  Herron in 1895. By 1911 he had moved to Armagh and they had 8 children. Robert 1895, Elizabeth 1897, James 1899, Sarah Mc 1901, Richard 1903, Thomas 1905, Margaret 1906, Samuel 1908. Later the family moved back to Whitewell Rd were they lived in a bungalow beside were the original Metropolitan Tabernacle was built. The last survivor, Sam, died a few years ago. They had relatives - family of Samuel Humphrey(s) and Elizabeth Hunter. Their children were William J 1896, Robert 1897, Samuel 1898, Elizabeth 1904, Catherine 1906 and Susanna 1910.
A real puzzle as to how Margaret (I believe was born in Antrim) is related to the two brothers Robert and Samuel. There is a story in the family that Margaret's mother, Sarah Gray, worked at Galgorm Castle. She became pregnant, it is alleged, by one of the gentry there and she was forced to marry Adam Humphrey and were sent to Belfast to live. Please can anyone tell me how Adam Humphrey(s) is related to the brothers Robert and Samuel Humphrey(s)? Thank you for any help you can give. Their father was a William John Humphreys. Perhaps if I could find Adam Humphreys father's name that would give me the link.

If Margaret was born 1875 she might have been raised with/lived with Robert John (born 1867) but hardly likely to be raised by Robert John and his wife.

For reference here are the census links-

Robert John Humphrey- 1901 and 1911
Samuel Humphrey- 1901 and 1911
In 1901 looks like Margaret listed as Robert John's sister- his mother Margaret also in household.

William John Humphreys, son of James Humphreys, married 19 Feb.1861 Knockbreda district, Co. Down to Margaret McCormick, daughter of David McCormick.
1. Robert Humphreys born 4 Jan.1867 Whitehouse district (page 435 in civil register)

Children of Adam Humphreys and Sarah Gray-
1. Margaret born 22 Mar.1875 Broughshane [sub?] district
2. Adam born 26 July 1879 Ballymena district

Haven't found Adam and Sarah's marriage yet- do you have this already? should list fathers' names and occupations.
Added- there seems to be no marriage/death for Adam Humphreys in Ireland in civil registration index).
Have found a Sarah Grey married 1874 Co.Antrim to Adam ? .
There's a marriage for a Sarah Grey Ballymena registration district 1874 (volume 16 page 161) but can't match this to anyone named Adam.

Thank you so much for such a prompt reply! Robert always referred to Margaret as his sister - but clearly they don't have the same father. I think that Adam married Sarah Gr(a/e)y around 1874.  She was born in Antrim as far as I know. Went to work as a servant girl in Galgorm Castle and Adam Humphrey also worked there as a stable lad. I think I remember looking Adam up in the 1901 census and they were living in Belfast. I'll check that out again. Somewhere along the line she lived with Robert Humphrey and family on the Whitewell Road. She then lived at Bell's Row Whitehouse and was in early 40s when she married William Hollis. They had one son, William, my father, born in 1915
Thanks again
June

Thank you for your help too. Obviously they were not brother and sister. Would anyone be able to find a link between Adam's father, Robert, and William John's father, James. Would also be interested in finding out if Adam and Sarah perhaps died young and that's why Margaret went to live with a relation. Have tried to find a death registered for her parents, Adam and Sarah, but have drawn a complete blank. Grateful to you both for your invaluable help.

I've already posted the details of Robert (born 1867), Margaret (born 1875), Adam (born 1879) earlier in this thread. I can;t get the site to show birth of a Samuel in 1864.
