Yellowley - Newlands - Gregson - Place - Ryle
« on: Monday 06 June 11 00:31 BST (UK) »
Hi Folk,

I have just been having a look at the South Shields page on eBay searching for postcards to illustrate the old family tree when I noticed an interesting 1861 document for sale.

It seems to be all about a Jane Yellowley, wife (or widow) of William Yellowley who was giving up the rights to some property in South Shields. Other names mentioned were Ann & Robert Newlands, Isabel & John Ryle, Mary & John Gregson, and Ann Elizabeth & John Place. Now with a name like Yellowley what do you do but go straight to the 1861 census, and sure enough there she is living with her daughter and son-in-law Ann & Robert Newlands in Bradford House, which is a drapers shop. I think from the census description it could have been in Green Street.

I did a search of this website for the name Yellowley and only found 4 posts connected to the name and none of them very recent. Anyway I thought someone just might be searching for family tree information, hence this post. I do hope the document finds the right home.

Happy Searching,
Patsy

Hi,

Just for your information - my house in South Shields was built by Alexander & William Yellowley in 1885.  Alexander lived in our house for a while.  I researched the family a little bit and their grave is still in place at Westoe Cemetery.

Can't remember exactley where Jane fitted in, in the family  - but -
their father was a taxidermist and the museum in South Shields did have some of his works on display.

I would have loved to see the document  - just for the house history.

Jo

Hi Jo,

Sorry you did not come across this post sooner, as the documents have long gone from eBay. They were very interesting, but no doubt only someone with a family connection would have put in a bid. You never know they might read your reply and respond, don't give up hope, I have had replies years later!!!!

Good Luck with your searching,
Best Wishes, Patsy

Hello,
Just noticed this after a long absence - oh no ! alas I am  too late :(

I am interested in the Ryle aspect - I have Johns & Isabel(la)s so they could be mine.

I also have a Ryle that married a Spencer, but gave a child the middle name of Yellowly.

Isabella Bagnall Ryle m James William Spencer
b. 1861                         b. 1863

Children:
John W Spencer
b. 1891
Jane A. Spencer
b. 1895
Edward Yelllowly Spencer
b. 1900

Yellowly may have been  James' mother's maiden name.

I presume Yellowley and Yellowly are interchangeable spellings down through the years?

Do you know what the document was called and anything more specific in it?

At least it was saved and not in a bin somewhere lost forever :)

Hopfeully the person who bought it might see this topic.
