Mary Martin, Born Co. Tyrone
« on: Sunday 05 June 11 23:35 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I've just started researching my mothers paternal line. Her great great grandfather was Patrick Martin from Lisburn, Co. Antrim. He was born around 1857 and married a lady called Mary who was born in Co. Tyrone around 1866.

I know nothing about Mary and would love to find out more. I tried finding their marriage certificate on Emerald Ancestors to no avail.

The only thing I know is that they were living in Lisburn, Co. Antrim in 1911 census and had 10 children (Peter, Margaret, Mary, Patrick, Sarah, Annie, Teresa, Bella, Dominic & Joseph)  I would love any suggestions or insights!

Thank you

Think you mean 1901 census-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Lisburn/Chapel_Hill/1000876

Son Peter is listed as age 22 (when Mary would have been about 13 years old) and next child Margaret is 9 years younger so I suspect that Patrick might have been married previously and that Peter is a son from the 1st marriage.

Looks like the younger children are in this household in 1911-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,
Using the Aunt's surname in the 1911 census I have found that on 10 Oct 1886 Patrick Martin married Mary Carrigan in Hillsborough Roman Catholic Church, Lisburn

Thanks for this!

Aghadowey, that was a wonderful find in the 1911 census. I hadn't noticed the younger kids living with their aunt. I guess this also confirms that the Hillsborough marriage I'd found previously (and so did kingskerswell... thank you!) is theirs. I love that town... quite delighted they were married there!

I did wonder why Peter was born when Mary was 13. This would be young even for those days so I assume you're right about him being married previously.

I'll keep looking into this, starting back into researching my ancestry after a years break. I'm pretty rusty!

Patrick Martin Birth 1857c census 1901- 72 Chapel Hill Street
Marriage 1878 Mary Carrigan

I am researching the Martin family tree my grandfather Dominic being one of the children who was living with their aunt in 1911 census. It has come as a great surprise to my dad who was born in 1925 in Lisburn that his father is one of 10 children as he only ever met the three other children who lived with their aunt in Chapelhill Street. I have done a lot of research but can not find out what happened to Patrick and Mary. I can find Peter married in 1911 census with children and one of the girls in lodgings.

My father will be 87 this year and I would like to solve the mystery.
 :)

Hi,
I can find a Patrick Martin who married Mary Carrigan in Hillsborough Roman Catholic Church, Lisburn District on 10 Oct 1886. This  date differs from yours. The fathers' names were Peter Martin and Patrick Carrigan.

Thanks for this you have the right marriage to Mary but he was previously married. My frustration is that between 1901 census and the 1911 census the family are no longer living together and the youngest 4 children Isabella, Elizabeth, Joseph and (Dominic) are living in 28 Chapel Hill Street with their aunt Margaret Carrigan.

My father did not know till I started researching a couple of months ago that he had these other aunts and uncles, but most importantly  Mary and Patrick seem to have dissapeared and I can find no trace of them.

Dad thought he was the last Martin in the line but obviously he is not he is 87 this year and would live to solve the mystery of his missing realitives.

Kind regards Sandra
