Screen froze in the middle of a long post so will try again and perhaps post in several sections.

I was asked to have a look at this topic from an Irish records point of view and haven't read through the whole thread so apologies if I'm repeating things which have already been mentioned.

Firstly, I found an Ancestry tree (thinking of starting a petition to ban them!) which says LDB's father John Barrett born c1815 and died 8 Apr.1880 in Co.Tyrone- the source for the latter being R.C. Parish burial register. No indication wife was called Jane or even that he had a wife.
The death certificate, which is also online, gives more, and different details- widower (no indication of wife's Christian name), age 78 (born c1802), date of death 6 April (8 Apr. in register likely burial date, I didn't go back to check) at Aughadulla (agrees with residence in burial register), cause of death- old age, informant- John Barrett of same townland.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1880/06477/4863493.pdf
I didn't look further into this family as I can see no obvious connection with LDB but suspect someone doing the online tree attached this John Barrett as LDB's father based on location (Ireland) and Ancestry suggestion. Perhaps petition to ban Ancestry trees should include banning Ancestry suggestions?

It's much more likely that LDB, or his family, originated in Armagh area given the prevalence of Barretts using Dobbin as a middle name. Unfortunately, because the 'Dobbin Barrett' combination is so widespread there and goes back so far it may not be possible to sort out LDB's family in Ireland.

There was another Leonard Dobbin Barrett born in Ireland (in Portadown but much later) which might be worth making note of. His birth (1900) gives parents as Jacob Barrett & Jane Frazer. Jacob & Jane's marriage (1890) gives the grooms father as John Dobbin Barrett, farmer.

Now, onto the next tree I found (Family Search)- again submitted so any doubtful bits of information can be added.
This one gives the above Jacob Barrett as Jacob Alfred Barrett born 1848 died 1917. Says Jacob's parents were John Dobbin Barrett (1809-1855) & Mary Walsh (1805-1863). Other children listed are Mary Ann Barrett (1833) married John Fullerton, Eliza Ellenor Barrett (1838), Gregory Wilson Barrett. Note that LDB not mentioned.
I was able to find Gregory Wilson Barrett easily enough in civil records- married 1848 Letitia Harcourt and died 1871 age 56, making Gregory ten years younger than suposed mother and father.

Civil registration of births, deaths & Catholic marriages started in 1864 (non-Catholic marriages from 1845) and the first available census for Ireland is 1901. To find church records (baptism of LDB for example) you'd need to know family's religion and where they lived (parish if not townland not just a county) then see what records survive (not all that do are available online).

Aghadowey explored the possible "Dobbin" connection in Armagh where the name was turning up but nothing conclusive for Leonard Barrett.

Thank you Aghadowey for spending time going though the thread, over 95 pages, it was very much appreciated.

Quite probably it is true that his father had passed away in 1840 although no documentation to be positive regarding that.

Captain Leonard Barrett was given the schooner Mariquita in 1860 for a trip New York to Africa. This schooner may have been used in the slave trade.  ???  He was very young at 19 years 9 months
(again no source given)

This is the quote from ancestry tree " Took charge of schooner, Mariquita. He was paid $80 a month and was directed to sail to Africa and back to New York. At this time Captain Barrett was 19 years 9 months old"  Same tree owner also names the first born daughter - Mariquita Georgina Barrett (1861) - although you can see on the 1880 census it was Margaret by then.

Tending to think this has come from a descendant as was the "Stowaway" story.

Perhaps worth an enquiry to ask ?  We have been lucky to find a volume of information on Leonard Barrett, the Rutledge family (from where both his wives came) and other descendants.
The original poster has been on line since you joined SBDJ, have you tried to contact him through the personal message system. He was working for a friend who was a very elderly lady back in 2011 and I believe he may have been in contact with a family tree member. So he might have more answers for you.

Another part which caught my eye after several read thru's was reply 32 when Fred said that his friend had corrected herself and thought there may be a link to James Buchanan  1791 - 1868 (not William Harrison)  15th President of the United States, U.S. Congressman, Senator, Diplomat.
He never married, so the link would have had to be from one of his siblings.  Quick look though those did not turn anything up to link Buchanan to Barrett. Thousands of anc trees on that family  :-\

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Buchanan

There was a marriage in 1826 of a John Barrett to a Jane Buchannon in Armagh. Ireland. Again nothing to connect Leonard Barrett to them.

I will contact the original poster, thanks for the suggestion.

Don't know the stowaway story. I do know there was a family legend when I was young that once upon a time we had an ancestor who was a ship's captain and that he refused to participate in the slave trade.

I wouldn't argue your descendant theory, I don't have an ancestry account but I do know some of my relatives do, or have had one in the past. I have never heard the story that was posted earlier about Captain Barrett jumping over board to rescue an enslaved person.

The original poster may have more information than he had back in 2011.

Have you checked out https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/ as per the suggestion made back in reply 20.  Its amazing where small snippets can be picked up.

Fred gave an account of saving the black slave in reply 40.  He would be able to tell you if it was the friends grandmother who was recalling the family tales.  Amazing how these can sometimes change with time.
