George Robert Charlton - 1911 Census
« on: Saturday 04 June 11 19:55 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am stuck! (again)

I have an ancestor named George Robert Charlton. Born 11th December 1867 (Hexham 10b  262) in Brunton Wall, Hexham, , Northumberland. (Got the BC so I know it is the right one).

He married Phillis Thompson on 19th September 1891. (Hexham 10b 457) Cert pending.

I have located George and Phillis in the 1901 census as living in 17 Windsor Terrace, Hexham. He is lited as being a railway engine driver.

When I try a lookup for either George or Phillis in the 1911 census I get nothing whatsoever!  :( I am not sure which railway company he was employed by (LNER, GNR NER or even a private pit company) just that he was a train driver.

Fast forward to December 1940 and I see the death recorded for Phillis Charlton (Northumberland West 10B 532). I have not found any death record for George Robert Charlton yet but am still looking.

How can people totally disappear from the 1911 census? With him being a train driver I did wonder if he could have been a long haul driver and maybe was away from home for a census, but what about Phillis?

I will keep on searching but would welcome any suggestions as to how to find the missing couple!

Have you searched Scotlandspeople website to see if they went north of the boarder (I too couldn't see them after 1901 in England)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Might also be worth looking at the immigration and emmigration records on ancestry.

I see there is a George R Charlton emmigrating in 1903 only problem isd he says he is Scottish

Also found this record which may be worth more investigation

Hi

Further to the above post, the Passenger List of the "Ormuz", departing London for Sydney on 2 January 1903, contained the following -

Ticket No. 141   Mr. Geo. R. Charlton. aged 35, single, Scottish, Engine Driver

Unfortunately, the entire entry has been crossed out

However, an additional Passenger List for the same ship, departing Plymouth for Sydney on 3 January 1903, contained the following -

Ticket No. 141  Geo. Rt. Charlton, aged 35, married, English, Miner

Taking into account some possible clerical errors, it could be your George

Thank you, that is very interesting. Maybe the Geordie accent had them thinking 'Scottish'? He was certainly listed a a train driver in the 1901 census so I am thinking...too coincidental. Plus is it kind of a family tradition to immigrate! I did and so did my great Aunty and we are both kin to him! ;D

I will certainly research this one further. Thanks to all.  :)

Hi Kevin

Something else to complicate matters

The Passenger List of the "Orontes" departing London for Sydney on 6 October 1903 contained the following entries -

Ticket No. 4613  Mr. G. R. Charlton, aged 34, married, Scottish, Engine Driver
Ticket No. 4614  Mrs. Charlton, aged 32, married, Scottish

As with my previous post, both entries have been crossed out but I have been unable to find any alternative entries

Well those ages ceretainly pan out correctly too.

Does the fact they are struck out mean they didn't travel? Or that they did and were 'checked off' .

I guess I should start looking for 'landed aliens' in OZ?  :o

Thanks again
