West Bromwich - Back of Dial - 1881 Census
« on: Friday 03 June 11 15:05 BST (UK) »
I have been looking at some ancestors who lived at an address in West Bromwich.

On the 1881 Census the address is "Back of the Dial".

It's on an odd street name or address. Can anybody throw some light on this, knows where it was, why it was called that.

Many thanks

I would assume it refers to Dial Lane - which contained some 270+ houses - and would refer to a rear property?

"Back of " seems to be quite common in them times  ;D

Thanks for that. I'll do a bit more digging around.

Perhaps it was back to back houses. My re lived in one in walsall and it was entered as the name of the street followed by backhouses.
