Halford drowning Shipston on Stour
« on: Friday 03 June 11 01:15 BST (UK) »
Greetings,

Hoping for some help with my Halford ancestors from Shipston on Stour.  My GG grandfather John Halford is shown as a "servant" on my great grandfather John Halford's birth certificate, but I just found a listing that a "farmer" named John Halford drowned in the Stour River in 1849 and I'm wondering if this is my ancestor or another with the same name.  Have written to the Stratford library for more info, but any help from others interested in the Halfords of Shipston on Stour would be most welcome.

My great grandfather John Halford (b. Shipston on Stour 1838 mother Sarah Farbrother) came out to Australia in 1870 where my grandfather Walter Halford was born.

With thanks,
Bob Morrison

Hi Bob,

There were lots of Halford families, presumably originally related around the Shipston-on-Stour (Warwickshire) area, some were landowners others not. There is a village called Halford (Warwickshire) about 2 miles away from Shipston and another called Tredington (Warwickshire but previously in Worcestershire) about the same distance away, both had Halfords living in them. There are references to the family in 'UK Archives Online' and there are parish records available online around the area which can tell you a lot about the family.
