Death Notices in South Africa
« on: Thursday 02 June 11 23:07 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for advice on how to go about obtaining a death notice for a death in Barkly West, Northern Cape that occurred in 1908. I have the church's burial register and entry number for the funeral service which gives the date of death and burial date. TEDED

Hi there,

Have you contacted
 ;) St Mary Anglican
:) Wits Uni's William Cullen Library
 :) the independent transcriber
 :)  www.eggsa.org

I think this would be the notice you found
1908 Oct 2   SCOTT Daniel
Residence: Longlands Barkly West
Died: 1 Oct 1908   Age at death: 52 yrs    Buried: 2 Oct 1908 by J. COTTRELL
Source: Barkly West - St Mary (Anglican), Barkly West, Northern Cape. burial register, 1878-1927. Repository: Wits University: William Cullen Library. Transcribed by Gary Cannon, independently

I am not familiar with Sth Africa's records,  so I do not know how to obtain death certificates, or if the information on these would be as informative as those on certificates issues in Victoria or NSW Australia .... (from information provided by the informant, these d.c.s give the deceased's parents including nee names, spouse/s, date and place of marriage/s, the children of each marriage, burial details, Rev/cemetery/funeral director etc)
These are much more informative that the UK ones, and so I wonder :

What information would usually be on a d.c. for 1908 for Nrthern Cape death/burial  registration ...... please  ;)

How can Teded find when David Scott arrived in Sth Africa ?   Are there any digitised newspapers for Teded to search .... looking for any notices for Teded's forebear....

Cheers,  JM for NSW Australia

Hi TEDED,

The South African Death notice is similar to your d.c.s.
I have searched the Cape Town repositary under which Barkley West fell without luck for a Daniel (Dave) Scott.

This is the site for the whole of SA: www.national.archives.gov.za/naairs

Regards

Bruce

Bruce. There's a missing great grandfather. It's only this week that the mystery was solved on his wife in Australia. The whole story is on the RootsChat sites "Children of Daniel McBride Scott"  and "Christian Names Only". We believe great grandfather took off to South Africa on missionary work (his father did the same thing), sometime after 1893. My grandmother wrote on the back of a photo in July 1907 that he was in SA - Kimberley. There is no Kimberley in South Australia (an Australian State) so we assume it is Kimberley, South Africa. He is marked as deceased on my Grandmother's wedding certificate of 1-1-1910. So our Daniel Scott died between mid-1907 and late 1909. That's why I'm trying to find the details of a burial of a Daniel Scott, listed on the "Burial Register 1878-1927 (entry no:278) of St.Mary The Virgin Anglican Church, Barkly West. (died 1-1-08, buried 2-10-1908). TED-Australia
