Have you tried searching Trove Newspapers?

The advanced search gives you lots of options for searching.

The  Resource Section (in your case, of course, NSW) at the top of the Australian Board is always the best starting point when you are seeking a way to do your own research through available online material .

Hi Kesham,

Can you post the name of the alleged criminal, and details of the incident, and perhaps anyone else involved? We might be able to find something for you.

If you have a little more information to go on it might be searchable in the local newspapers. Have you been in touch with the closest library, or historical society, to Tumut? I would try the library first in case they have a council run local studies section.

Katharine.

Hi katharine..
The alleged criminal is Martin Corbett, the other person involved was a William Williams,  It was to do with a drunken brawl in 1880 at Reedy Flats ( Batlow NSW )it must have been printed in the Tumut Paper.. Martin was commited for trial but thats all I can find,
I would just like to know if he was charged and went to Jail or not..
I have searched and still can't find anything, but then again maybe I am looking in the wrong places

Hi Kesham. Just had a look on ancestry.com.au and state archives and I cannot see anything pertaining to a Martin Corbett having been in Gaol etc.
I think you might be best to contact the Tumut Library via post or phone (they don't seem to have a website) and ask if they might have a look in the paper for you. According to the Tumut Family History Group website, the only paper for the region which would cover 1880 would be the Gundagai Times which they have copies between 1868-1905.
If you contact the library with the date of the event they might be able to look it up for you for free.
Otherwise the Tumut FHG charges somewhere around $30 for research.
Let us know how you get on!
Katharine.
