ROBERT GIBSON ALLAN - Mystery
« on: Wednesday 01 June 11 20:44 BST (UK) »
I have an 1861 census entry for Robert Gibson Allan (born about 1833 Scotland) with his wife Jane Allan born about 1835 Middlesex) and their daughter Mary Jane Allan born 1859 South Shields). They are living at Westoe, South Shields. His occupation is Mariner/Naval Volunteer possibly contributing to the mystery.
They have a son Robert Shay Allan who was born 1856 South Shields, he was staying with his grandmother in the 1861 census.
The initial problem I have is tracing them in 1871 and 1881. I cannot trace any matching deaths, so where are they?
Mary Jane Allan marries in South Shields late 1881 so she should show somewhere in 1871/1881 census
The young Robert Shay Allan, he marries Jan 1881 in South Shields to a Maria Smith born about 1859 South Shields) . I may have traced Robert in 1881 to be on a boat in Deptford. London recorded as Robert Allen b 1856 South Shields. His occupation shows a a Stoker in 1891 and Boilerman in 1901)
I have traced Maria and son Edward in 1881 living with her parents.
I have considered searching Allan and Allen as some census entries are written as Allen
The bigger mystery unfortunately is where in Scotland did Robert Gibson Allan come from.

I didn't find Robert but there is a marriage of a William Allan and Catherine Gibson 7 Jul 1829 in Aberdeen City

You might need to get the marriage cert of Robert Gibson Allan and Jane Collett in the South Shields registration district.  That will tell you his father's name and occupation.  Give you chance to find them in Scotland if you know his father's name and occupation.

Many thanks Janis,
I knwo his father was John Allan from teh marriage entry on FamilySearch. But coudl not trace a marriage of a John Allan to a ??? Gibson in Scotland.
Sometimes it would be nice to trace a link without having to fork out for yet another certificate. I will send off for this one and update when I receive it.
Althoughj the mystery still arises , where is he and Jane in 1871/1881??

You didn't mention you knew his father's name on your first entry.

Which Family search vehicle are you using?

My apologies Janis, possibly because I did not think it relevant as he was now married and living apart from his father. Tracing his parents in Scotland and pre-1856 I have raised a topic on the Scotland forum. Certainly no sign of him in England in 1841/1851.

For this marriage FamilySearch.org which gave this and also confirmed by South Tyneside registrars

marriage date: 25 Mar 1855   Robert Allan and Jane Collett
St. Hilda, South Shields, Durham, England
groom's father John Allan
bride's father Edward Collett
both Single

All who have helped so far
Now have Robert Gibson Allan's marriage certificate that shows his fathers name was John Allon and occupation Joiner. So odddly different spellings on the same certificate.
