Technically I think PP will say the Police Gazettes 'belong' to Archives but seeing as Natlib and Archives are right cuddly at present there may be some nepotism that works in our favour!

Lastly, we've figured out the problem with that volume in the A to J's that aghadowey came across, and we've got a fix planned. Thanks for spotting it aghadowey!

Many thanks for working on it- I look forward to reading the information when it's fixed  :)

I got stares from the office at the snort of laughter you prompted there. I think the Police Gazette is a great idea, and we like Archives NZ :-) Maybe there's an opportunity there, I'll see what I can do. I think the major initial hurdle will be to see if it fits the definition of "newspaper" that we have to apply to PP stuff.

Also, thanks heaps Twiggy for the shiny new avatar pic you sent!

Spades - Kumara Times has actually already been nominated, so you've just given it a "user demand +1". It's my favourite newspaper title, alongside the "Hot Lakes Chronicle".
Which particular "Guardian" were you referring to? I think we have about ten different newspaper titles all called "Guardian" in our catalogue from different parts of NZ, and I think we only have microfilm for one or two of them. If you can let me know which guardian you're keen on, we'll do some digging.

And could I ask that the list of 'Nominated' papers be published here? I don't know about anyone else but I have completely lost track of what might be coming next.  ;)

Spades

I'll check with a few people and see if it's ok to share some of this stuff in some way. I'm not sure the "nominated" pool would be as interesting for you guys as the "selection" pool, for example, and in the interests of being even-handed to all groups of people who use Papers Past, I'd probably look to have the info on the PP site somewhere, linked off the front page or similar.
I'm very much all for transparency, so I'm very keen on this. However there might be some sensitivities around it, so I can't make any promises - wish me luck, and thanks for the request!

Hi Paperspast
I was so pleased to see your posts, I was actually going to say is there a link we can see what is coming next.

I was going to ask was THAMES ADVERTISER on the list, I know somewhere there are microfilm because lots of reserachers have quoted them pre 1874..which is when the ones for the Evening Star/Thames Star start.
There would be alot of excellent info in all the Evening Star editions you could get. They seem to have reported on mining and other events in more details; plus from a genie point of view alot of folk seem to have only placed their BMD notices in the advertiser.

Is there plans to take the Thames Star beyond 1920?

Many thanks
Althea in Thames

Hi Althea -
Thames Advertiser is on our radar, and I've just checked our holdings of the Thames Star past 1920 - we appear to have incomplete coverage past that date. So in the short-term, no Thames Star post 1920 on PP coming up soon.
Maybe some kind generous library in the Thames/Waikato area has a whole bunch of microfilms and would be keen to see them up on Papers Past...perhaps we could put together a complete dataset collaboratively.

Hi Papers Past,

Quote
...it fits the definition of "newspaper"...

Well, they were all printed on paper and they were certainly considered news to the police officers reading them...! And I suspect that they may prove to win the prize for 'most frequently read title'. 8)

I realised when I mentioned The Guardian that there were several newspaper carrying the name although I didn't know there were that many. The one I'm interested in would cover Westland. I don't know where it was printed, sorry.

As for a 'Nominated' list, just a regular update on the Papers Past website would be fine; e.g. "Future Releases", perhaps.

Congratulations on an excellent avatar and thanks for all the feedback regarding Papers Past and AtoJ's.

Hi Mackiwi - indeed it is :)

I'll bring up the whole topic of the release schedule and how we communicate it at our next monthly meeting. Until then I'll probably have to hedge my bets by giving slightly vague answers like the above, I'm sorry for that, I hope the tidbit will suffice in the meantime.
