I am having a hard time seeing the Romani connection however other than the gypsy lifestyle.

Hi everyone,

Regarding gypsy heritage. The more I read, the more I believe Esther Campbell and William Lambert and other family members to be gypsies, but NOT of Romani descent. One piece of evidence is that I am 100% of European descent as per DNA results. There are gypsy groups that are of European descent - I am trying to figure out our specific gypsy families but as you know hitting brike walls due to lack of records - another clue to gypsy heritage. As Campbell is a Scottish name, I am going to start there. Let me know if you figure anything out.

Lambert family that I am related to
We’re Romany Gypsy
Many over the years have tried to prove or disprove. The difference is records only give a small picture as to fact inside family knowledge is everything
The lambert family were for generations
Wood Carvers Engravers Metal workers Scrap and Rag Men They also We’re Gypsy Blacksmiths . My mother still has in her possession Tools that belonged to her Great grandfather Edward Jesse Lambert . The lambert men like most Romany men also kept bought sold horses and I can remember such as a kid Watching them take the horses to wash in the river banks of the River lee .
The men were swarthy darker skinned and all had the same eyes I remember them wearing Diklas . The lambert family were known in the areas of Tottenham Edmonton Enfield Waltham
Walthamstow Epping And Areas of Kent Including Maidstone Ashford Sittingbourne and more . Many will have known them as surname smith but on paper they were Lambert .
Jesse /Rosina / Ada seem to be popular girls names with in the family. My Grandfather was born in 1912 and I met and still remember many of the older memories and the story’s I was told .
It was My family that taught me Words like Gaje  And Hotchi And some of the Romany language.
West street Edmonton st Mary’s road Edmonton and Lawrence road are all places I know my family were around .
If anyone is linked or knows of this family I would love to hear from you .
I have alot to share .
Happy new year everyone
 Joey

Hi KimberlyAnnLambert

Sorry I am a bit late to the party.  One website I have been to states that there are currently over 22,000 Lamberts in the UK, so not all of them will be Romani Gypsy, but I can confirm my Grandfather was a Romani Gypsy (Referred to by "kewsmith9" as "William (uncle bill)"), and could speak Romani)  He grew up in the old wooden horse drawn caravans and could build one.  My uncle Danny (also referred to by "kewsmith9"), once told me a story of how a friend of my Grandfathers came to him with a problem.  A group of gypsies had set up camp on his land, refused to leave, and were trashing the place, and he asked if my grandad could do anything.  Grandad walked into the camp, where he received a hostile reception, until he responded in Romani.  They had a very long chat, and he enjoyed there hospitality.  They promised to leave in the morning and to clear up after themselves, and they kept their word.

There is also a group of Romani Gypsy Lamberts still roaming around (as of 2000 at least).  In that year, I made a friend online who claimed her own Romani decent, but could only speak a few words.  She informed me that she had been to their camp on a few occasions.  Later, when we exchanged pictures for some website project we were working on, she told me she would have known I was a Lambert from the picture, and that I could walk into the camp myself and be instantly recognised from my facial features.  Of course, I only have her word for it.

Also, "joeyboy7" also made reference to my family.  Between "kewsmith9" and "joeyboy7", I have been reminded of a lot of names I have not heard of since I was a young boy, so if you are still about, thank you.

Kind Regards

Danny Lambert
