I have found the occupation of Mauger as fathers profession on a marriage certificate dated 1899 in Salford, Manchester, can anybody help

The name seems to be connected with the surname Major - maybe it has Army connections?

Thanks for the quick reply. It is doubtful it is a mawer as area concerned was highly industrialised not much room for gardens in those days.

French: from the same personal name as 1, or from a short form of the personal name Amauger, from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements amal ‘strength’, ‘vigor’ + gar, ger ‘spear’.
South German: dialect variant of Maunker, nickname for a morose person.

Thank you for that one,

It is a possible, Salford was on the Manchester Ship Canal, and the docks where open to the world.

Great Grandad was I believe an alcoholic, so perhaps liked to take a nip of the barrels!
