Thanks Groom (and Dazey99).

My grandfather is in the 1911 census b.1887 in South Norwood and living in Bradford which is correct.

I know he was kicked out of the family at an early age which may mean that at 14years old in 1901 census he could have been elsewhere.

I won't totally rule out the mentioned family noted by yourselves as there appears to be two Alberts and its not to say that there are not two Walters.

In the 1881 census I did find two Player families one living at 3 Eden Cottages, St. Marks Road. Croydon, Surrey and the other lived at 35 Arplay Road, Penge. These may have some links.

Anyway thankyou with your endeavours, I will try to get it ironed out.

Hi

Another way would be to get his marriage certificate to see if that gives his father's occupation, that would then rule out the one with a greengrocer as a father and might help identify him in other censuses.

I am back and have finally had confirmation of my grandfather. He was born on 28th August 1888 and registered at the Ship Yard, High Street, Croydon. His parents were William and Mary Ann Player nee Coates.

Thanks Dazey 999,

Yes I  believe that this is my grandfathers father and mother and his younger brother and sister .I am lead to believe from my mothers recollection that he had lots of brothers and sisters.
Many thanks for your information it is most appreciated. Hopefully
it will all fall into place soon.
