Player families of South Norwood circa 1890
« on: Monday 30 May 11 09:17 BST (UK) »
I am researching the background of my grandfather Walter Player who was born in South Norwood in 1887, he was one of nine. At the time there were a couple of Player families in that area and I am looking for any background. He had a sister Kate who lived at Crystal Palace and a brother possibly called Albert who lived in Sheffield and who fought in the First World War who I know little of. My grandfather married Olive Shackleton and lived in Bingley, West Yorkshire. they both died in 1967.

Hi crayvalley
What exactly are you hoping to find?  Have you got census details for your Player family?  Would you like to know the names of all Walter's siblings?  If you could be a bit more specific I'm sure you'll get a better response.  Here they are in 1901:

RG13; Piece: 648; Folio: 55; Page: 41

3 Addison Rd, South Norwood

John Player, age 48, greengrocer, born Thornton Heath, Surrey
Fanny (wife) age 26, born Forest Hill
sons Arthur (15) and Albert (13) born South Norwood
son Walter (5) born Woodside
son Albert E (3) born Croydon
dtrs Lucy (1) and Maud (6m) born South Norwood
visitor John Player (78) born Quainton, Essex
boarder Frank Davey (19) greengrocer's assistant, born London

Looks like Fanny was John's 2nd wife:

Marriage Croydon Jan-Mar 1899
John Player/Fanny Letts

Hope this helps, Dazey

Sorry crayvalley..I've just realised that the Walter Player I found in the 1901 census would have been born c.1895/6 and you say that yours was born in 1887 - so it looks like I've picked the wrong family.  Perhaps you're going to have to buy his birth certificate to confirm his parents' names?  Dazey

These are the two births of Walter Player

Dec quarter 1888  Walter Player  Croydon  2a  203

June quarter 1899 Walter Frederick Player Croydon 2a 315

So yours must be the first one. Still cant see him in any census pre 1911.
