Old Hill waterside

Was just wondering if anyone on here ever knew where the 'Old Hill' in the waterside area of Derry was?
Got a few birth certs and thats the street name on them. Thanks.

Are you sure about the name? you haven't mentioned a date but closest I can think of is Bond's Hill, Waterside.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Ive a birth cert in 1898 Aghadowey and a death cert in 1901. The thing is the person who died in 1901 Sarah Murray, is in the 1901 census as living in her sons house at 7 fountain hill. She then died a month later and the address is 19 Old Hill which says in the cert is her sons (didnt say the sons name) house?? Confusing i know but has to around this area somewhere!! I was thinking maybe they used to call Fountain hill this but surely they wouldnt have mixed the numbers of the doors up?

Hi,
   There is in the Waterside area of Londonderry an area known as Gobnascale which I have seen described as Gobnascale (Old Hill) and there is an area in Gobnascale today known as Top of the Hill. It offers good views of the old city on the west bank.

In 1901 census Sarah Murray is listed in household of son, John Murray- 7 is the house number on the census form-

Looks like they moved to Herbert St. by 1911 (I was hoping they'd have stayed at same place)-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Londonderry_No__5_Urban/Herbert_Street/606824

However, looking at 1911 household forms for Fountain Hill there are no actual house numbers listed. There are a few directories for Londonderry online for this period but they list only merchants & traders not every household.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Cheers kingskerswell, live in that part of Derry, great views indeed. Never actually heard it called Old Hill but maybe its just an old name, i have a map of that part of derry from 1905 but cant find Old Hill anywhere! Thanks.

  Thats what i was hoping aswell Aghadowey when id seen they moved to Herbert St. Where can i get those directories online? Once again thanks.

'Old Hill' was the local name given to Fountain Hill in the mid to late 19th century. It is a very hilly street situated between Gobnascale and Spencer Road, in the Waterside area of Derry.

An even earlier name for Old Hill - Fountain Hill was 'Old Quay Brae'
