PAUL family from Glasgow
« on: Saturday 28 May 11 10:32 BST (UK) »
Greetings
I am wondering if someone would be kind enough to give me a helping hand please.  I am looking for information on a William (Travers) PAUL, who immigrated to NZ sometime at the beginning of the 1880's or close to. I have been following carefully a William Paul born 25 August 1854, son of Mary (nee Barclay) and William Paul.  Wm (Travers) Paul who immigrated to NZ was a seaman and the family I have been following is shown in the 1861 census as William aged 6 and mother Mary aged 45  living in London. She is shown as a Ship Masters Wife with both mother and son having been born in Glasgow.  The husband is absent from the home. This Wm Paul is in Liverpool in the 1871 census...occupation seaman, but then he disappears off the face of the earth...or did he come to NZ.?  I recently purchased the death certificate of William Travers Paul (my husbands great grandfather), but unfortunately parents names and place of birth were not known (information given by his stepson). In 1905 his age was 50.   Unfortunately, Wm Travers Paul and my husband's great grandmother, Susan Ann Woodgate never married because her first husband was still alive, so there is no information to be gleaned from a marriage certificate.  I am interested to find the birth of a Wm Travers Paul and the one I mention above doesn't give it on the IGI.  Can anyone suggest, please where  else I can look.  With thanks, Annie -NZ

What documentary evidence do you have that William Travers Paul was born in Scotland?

Unfortunately I have no evidence that he was born in Scotland.  Through research I believe that the one I found on the IGI was the most likely.  I was hoping that there might be some evidence in that area of the world of the birth or otherwise of a William TRAVERS Paul.

Thank you for your message.

Regards Annie

I searched the Scottish records for the birth of a William T* Paul and also searched for a marriage between a Paul and a Travers and no records showed

Thanks so much for your help.  Back to the drawing board for me....to see if I can find where his seaman's ticket was issued.  In 1885 he was the Chief Officer on the SS Wallace in NZ waters, when he nodded off to sleep and the ship founded on rocks.   As a consequence, his ticket was cancelled for 4 months.

Thanks again for your help
