Essex Maternity Hospital, Linwood, COMPLETED THXChCh
« on: Saturday 28 May 11 05:05 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
I am sure that ChCh Library has the answer, but we can't get there at the moment.
Does any one know the street number for this place? I have 16 and 56. (I am just trying to be EXACT again).

Hi Jean, haven't dug deeply enough for a street number, but have a try at these links. It was also known as the Female Refuge - later named Essex Maternity Hospital.

You may already have this info, but if not try these

About the fourth one down the page at

http://christchurchcitylibraries.com/FamilyHistory/Health/   even a photo click on it for bigger image

Then You want page 7 of this pdf

http://christchurchcitylibraries.com/Heritage/Digitised/Norris-1942/Norris-1942-195-217.pdf

There may be more available here if they are still up and running - it does have a reference to the Female Refuge

And a wee bit more on Page 24 at

Charitable aid institutions

Charitable aid began in Christchurch with grants of money from the Provincial Council to various organisations and institutions which looked after paupers and various other classes of destitute people or people in other sorts of need. After 1885, the Charitable Aid Board, set up under the Act of Parliament of that year, took over a number of the welfare institutions which had been founded and run by voluntary organisations. In 1910, a newly constituted Hospital Board took over the responsibilities of the formerly independent Charitable Aid Board.

Essex Hospital in Linwood was a charitable aid institution set up to look after single women needing maternity assistance and also ‘elderly women of the derelict type’. The original wooden building was demolished.

Hi Jean, I just had look at    http://archives.govt.nz/christchurch-earthquake-update-april-2011

It states about the Peterborough Street Office presently still remaining closed to the public. But then goes on to say

"In the meantime, we are able to provide a limited written reference service and you can email requests to christchurch@archives.govt.nz.We will do our best to answer your request, but this is dependent on whether the relevant archives are accessible. Please be aware that we may not be able to help you with your request until all repairs are completed and we are able to resume our normal reference services."

Might be worth a try for your street number.  Nothing ventured - nothing gained!!

Good Luck

My sister was born there.  Mum remembers the smell of fresh bread being baked in the early hours of the morning from the Essex Bread Factory across from the hospital.
Very strange as I was just talking about the hospital yesterday.

Been so busy.  Had builders around repairing damage, now trying to paint ceilings.  Hope we have not jumped the gun too soon.  Could not wait for EQC so payed for it ourselves.
