4th foot involvement at Battle of Waterloo

Can anyone help me place what role the 4th Foot Regiment, which was part of the 6th Division played at the Battle of Waterloo. I have looked at several maps but could not see their position in the Allies lines. The force replenishing and supporting Hougoumont is quite well documented so I do not think that the 4th were part of this force.

They may have been part of the centre force as this was a mass of British infantry, but I am not sure.

Any help would be most gratefully received.

Hi Glynn

Until you find a decent narrative the casualty rate is a good indication of their involvement. The 4th Foot were in Lambert’s (6th) Brigade with the 27th Foot and 40th Foot. They were initially in reserve. The respective casualty rates were:

= 4th Foot – 20%
= 27th Foot – 64%
= 40th Foot – 23%

So it suggests that the 27th did most of the reinforcing.

Casualty rate includes killed, wound and missing.
